I am excited to get into the International Human Rights Law Programme and my first choice college. However, I will have to empty my bank account for the programme. Any information on scholarships for international students will be greatly appreciated. Thank.

I am in the same boat - excited about getting in, but dreading the debt. Any and all suggestions about funding would be much appreciated! IHRL - where are you from? where you come can have an impact on where you can get funding.

I'm from the U.S. The exchange rate is my biggest issue.

I googled it. However, I could not understand the language, which seems to indicate that it is not for U.S. students.

Sorry to be an a***hole and burst ya bubble but if u got rejected by your first choice of college I wouldn't hold my breath about university funding, so it might pay to start finding other sources
Posted May 19, 2007 14:32
Why would a rejection from first choice college effect funding?
Posted May 19, 2007 18:09
I dont really understand why rejection from the college would effect my application for scholarship??With scholarships is dealing International Student's Office(if you arent English)and colleges decide on their own and as far as I read on this board merit criteria arent the most important.
Posted May 19, 2007 18:18
The logic, I suppose, is that obtaining merit based funding is more competative than obtaining entrence into one's first choice of college. If this is true, and I have no idea if it is, then it follows that not getting into one's college of choice suggests one is not a 'top canddate', which doesn't bode well for that same person obtaining merit based funding/
Obviously, to the extent that these two 'comptetitons' look to different criteria, then the argument is comprimised.
So, it's not that college rejection will affect funding directly, it's just that such rejection suggests one is perhaps not the cream of the crop.

I tend to agree. Considering everyone who applies is automatically considered for the Clarendon funding then you are competing again all those people many of whom got into their college of first choice. I imagine the criteria the colleges use are the same as those the International Office uses (with the exception of those colleges that have a limit on cetain types of students). Tis harsh, I know. Could be wrong though. The IO may look at different criteria from the colleges.
I am not sure where you read that there were criteria other than merit at Oxford but I imagine some colleges could choose based on class, race, religion, parental connections, bribery and so on. At least they have in the past... ; )

By non-merit criteria for college choice I meant how early someone submit the appliccation for the course. Of course I see your point that refusal from the college can influence somehow scholarship application.
Anyway my point was rather that I didnt get any information about my scholarship application and was curiuos if its only me:))

Sorry I can't help with that. I don't know about the Clarendon info. That being said I am not sure the date one submitted the application will affect the outcome although if your application was submitted to a second college that might slow things down somewhat.
I didn't mean to suggest that refusal from a college would influence the scholarship application (like you said, it shouldn't) but just that the same criteria might be used for both, which is what Craig2 was probably getting at.
Anyway, good luck to all!

Hi. I just spoke to someone who said they received a letter saying they did not have funding. Has anyone else received such a letter (apparently it was a while ago)

Do you think international students can have a student loan?
