Second LL.M

Chandana

Hi All,

I am planning to do my second LL.M this year. I did my first LLM In 2006 in Intellectual property and now I am planning to do in Financial services regulation. Main reason for doing LL.M again is I wanted to pursue Ph.D in this subject. Without a distinction in LL.M and deep knowledge of the subject, I cant start my Ph.D hence wanted to do the Master's again.

I was wondering if anyone has done double Masters here? Some universities have clearly mentioned on the website that they will not consider applications from students who already hold a LL.M which is a bit unfair. Anyway but I am in two minds now and rethinking over it whether it's worth it since I already hold one LL.M.

Grateful if someone could advise.

I obtained my first LL.M 2 years ago and am now off to the US to obtain another. Both are in different areas of specialisation. If you just explain why you are interested in the other area of law, I don't think it weakens your application at all.

It's just up to you to explain what you want to achieve and what interests you.

Best of luck!

I agree with Denning123 on this one. I also completed my llm in my home country, started a phd program and got accepted to all the universities I applied to for the LLM.... all you need to do is explain why and how this fits into your career plans...

In addition, if you want to pursue a second LLM at Harvard (for example) while your first LLM is from Columbia that might e a tricky thing to explain. But having a specialized LLM in a certain area and wanting to pursue a different specialism course somewhere else should not a barrier. A different experience and a different career focus with the intention to do a PhD afterwards surely counts for a good motivation :D
