I'm a twenty-something Indian and will be at New College -- my first choice. I was wondering if anyone has any information on when and how we make our choice of courses. Thanks in advance!

You can choose your courses the first week of Michaelmas, I think.

I read on the website that they send us out information as to the courses available for the 2006/7 academic year and we don't need to make our choices until then.

On another note ... when do we have to arrive in Oxford? When is everyone planning on getting there?

I think we are supposed to arrive the 26th of September so that's what I'll probably do.

A list of the courses they plan to offer in 2006-2007 will be published on the Faculty's website at some point later this month, but we are not expected to choose our courses until we actually come into residence in late September; if I remember correctly, the Faculty indeed offered some 'taster lectures' in the BCL courses during week 0 of Michaelmas last year to allow students to make a more informed choice.

Sorry to bother you with another question - I've looked on the website but am finding it hard to find the answers to some of these.

I vaguely remember reading that we're meant to do a month (?!) of pre-reading for our units before we arrive. Does anyone actually do that? And is it necessary? If lots of people haven't made their minds up until they arrive, it would be rather difficult to do ...

What date do classes actually start on?

In the admission letter I received from the University they stated that the Mjur program will start on Sunday 24th of Sept. That sounds a bit strange to me, for it is a Sunday. On the other hand it can make sense to arrive on Sunday if the actual program( at least fresher's week with all the introductions) starts on Monday.
However, in the acceptance letter of mt college (St. Edmund Hall) it was said that the study will beginn in October 2006.
So it might be good to give them a ring to clarify things. If I do it, I will let you know what the actual facts are...

@daniel12 - There is really nothing to be concerned about at this stage. The position is basically this: the first day of Michaelmas Term 2006 ('full term') is October 8th - term always starts on a Sunday in Oxford! -, so teaching for the BCL/MJur courses will commence on October 9th. Freshers' week will be week 0 (i.e. October 1st to October 7th), with a number of events taking place both at college and University level, e.g. tours of the libraries, welcome dinners, induction lectures/seminars etc. While the Law Faculty recommends that students come into residence some time before week 0 to "start reading for their courses" (see the website), you should wait and see what the law tutors at your college tell you to do. They will probably get in touch with you at some point during the summer. Hope this helps.

Incidentally, can anyone advise on the worth/interest of the Philosophical Foundations of the Common Law course?

Just some helpful hints and tips about Oxford...

Daniel - Oxford weeks begin on a Sunday and end on Saturday. The weeks are numbered, so you will be there on the Sunday of 0th week.

Alistair - Univ. is a fantastic college. You will have a great time there. John Finnis is Vice-Master, and often around the college, so it might be worth choosing some jurisprudence papers to take advantage of that. John Gardner (Professor of Jurisprudence) is also around in Univ.

GK - Wadham's nickname is not 'Sodham' for nothing. Beware!

Just to add another view to the mix about Wadham: I have studied there for about 4 years (as an undergraduate and currently as a postgraduate lawyer on the BCL) and have never found there to be any problems. I think it's a really nice college and the law tutors are very very approachable. In any event - as a postgraduate student, you don't have much personal contact with college as should be expected at postgrad level and are very much left to your own devices. But I have found that if I ever wanted to get in touch with my law tutors about anything they have been extremely extremely helpful. I guess everyone's experiences differ to some extent - however, I have personally never had anything but a positive experience.

Swats - thanks for your thoughts on Wadham: it's reassuring that you've had a good experience there. However, I didn't realise that I needed reassurance. While my research was far from exhaustive, I didn't realise there were perceived to be problems with Wadham. Are there any genuine issues I should be aware of?

Studentbarista - given that I'm not homophobic, is there anything I need to be concerned about?

gk: nope - no genuine issues at all. it's a brilliant college - was not giving my thoughts by way of reassurance - just giving my thoughts by way of observation / feedback. Don't worry at all.
