Oxbridge chances for Australian 2.1 hons?

weedle

Hello,

Sorry for yet another post about oxbridge. I'm curious as to what you all think about my chances of getting into oxbridge are.

Ok, so I am graduating soon from an Australian University. I will either get first class or 2.1 hons. However, getting first class hons is dependent on me receiving an 85%+ mark on my thesis. I seem to be on track to scoring 80%+ but I'm not sure about 85%.

I know that Oxbridge requires first class honours, but is there a chance of getting accepted if I'm on a borderline first? This is what I'm expecting to graduate with.

* Upper 2.1 hons.
* 5.8GPA (6.0 required for first class)
* 80%+ thesis which may get published in a peer reviewed journal
* All distinctions/high distinctions on core law units
* 2x academic awards for topping core units (100+ students enrolled)

I will also have 1 year of work experience in a non-profit legal centre (including being published as a co author of a chapter in a law textbook published by this centre).

What would be my chances of getting into Cambridge or Oxford with these results? Would my chances change if I worked for a reputable law firm for 2 years first (I have a job offer with a large firm but I am permitted to defer for the LLM).

Thanks xx

What's your class rank?

Unfortunately I don't know. Class ranks are rarely given out in Australia. Maybe upon graduation I can request what rank I had in terms of GPA for my cohort.

It sucks because everything is still done by GPA here in Aus, which is such a silly system and it's hard to rank students by it. For example, my average mark is 80%+ (which is extremely good for law and would rank top 5% at nearly any law school here) but my GPA is only 5.8, which isn't that high. Students have higher GPAs than me with lower average marks.

Difficult to give you any advice without your class rank.

Your extracurriculars are ok, but not outstanding, so the grades must do it for you.

Without your class rank however, it's hard to tell how you actually performed gradeswise.

As a general rule: There's a fair chance of making it into Oxbridge if you are within the to 10 % of your class. You're almost certainly in if your within the top five percent.
