Ox BCL and MJur

fanoflaw

Can someone enlighten me on the difference about the two..from the website, it seems that one is for common law students and the other is for civil law students. So, Can a student with common law background apply for Mjur? Can he take the courses provided by BCL while doing Mjur? How abt the tutorial arrangement, are they the same? Also, I heard the requirements for Mjur is lower than BCL, is that so?

So many questions, Thanks for answering!!

Am doin the BCL, here are my 20 cents:
1. It seems that one is for common law students and the other is for civil law students
Yes this is true, the MJur is a relatively newer degree, if I am correct it started in the 90s. The MJurs can select modules that are offered to the BCL but also can do some from the Undergradaute course.

2. So, Can a student with common law background apply for Mjur?
No, the BCL is the only degree for Common law backgrounds and MJur for Civil law...

3. How abt the tutorial arrangement, are they the same?
The Tutorials work differently for different modules. Generally, if the modules are common for the BCL and MJurs the Tutorials would be on similar lines. Please note for common courses, the BCL and MJurs take common classes (i.e. there are no seperate seminars/Tutorials)

4. Also, I heard the requirements for Mjur is lower than BCL, is that so?
Hmmm, I am not sure what you mean by requirements. Some modules (note SOME) require BCLs to answer 4 questions in the exam while MJurs need to answer 3 for the same paper. This is a bit controversial and the Law Faculty is looking into the same.

Hope this helps...
