Hey all ya lovely people, Im a 25 yr old guy from India and I have applied to a few law schools in the U.K. for an LLM. I have recieved unconditional offers from QMUL, Nottingham Uni and Manchester and im awaiting a couple more.
Now a lot of people have advised me to grab the QMUL while some say Nottingham is a bigger brand in comparision, since most of the sites which show Law Rankings(mostly Undergrad courses) have shown Nottingham to be a tad better than QMUL. Now I know a UCL,LSE,Oxford and the big guns obviously are first choices for most students but what happens when ur stuck with in betweens like QMUL,Nottingham,Birmingham etc etc,...
if anyone can substancially deduce or reason out which Uni is better or which LLM is would hold me in better stead on my C-V while job hunting, Id be grateful..cheers

Hi
If I were you I would look fat the RAE results rather than newspaper rankings, which are often based largely on Undergraduate study. The RAE looks at the research and international profile of academics in a School/University, which inevitably feeds into the teaching of all students, but particularly postgraduate students. Try http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/table/2008/dec/18/rae-results-2008-law-degree
Then, look at the modules on offer. Which programme offers you the modules you most want to do? What is the international reputation of the academic staff teaching them?
You might also want to think of other considerations - do you want to be in London (exciting but expensive) or somewhere away from the hustle and bustle. England is a pretty small country and London is very accessible from Manchester, Birminham and Nottingham so easy to visit.
At the end of the day only you can tell what is most important to you but I don't think you can go too far wrong with any of the Russell Group Universities.
I would also contact the Schools and ask if they can put you in touch with current or former students for advice and an unbiased opinion.

If you are interested in commercial law, ADR and IP/IT law, Queen Mary is top notch. Also the University of London brand is as good as Nottingham in my opinion...but you should also factor in the cost of living in London for one year.

It all depends off the legal field you are interested in. You cannot find much better from Nottingham if you want to do human rights law, international criminal justice, public international law or procurement law for example. Commercial and European law are also quite good. I agree that newspapers rankings are somewhat dubious and you should concentrate on those based on the research quality. Names are also important and the university that offers the contact with the more distinguished professionals in your field could be an indication of a better choice. Good luck.

I will concur with vidanhv. It all depends on the subjects. Look at the courses these universities offer and if you can find more specialised and interesting courses in one go for it. I can also confirm that in PIL, human rights, international criminal justice and public procurement, but also international sales of goods Nottingham has top notch people.
