LLM or job in london

deeksha

Dear friends,
i along with my husband and 2 kids aged 3 and 2 months will be in London for 3 years from April 2008. i have an LLB degree from India with 65% marks. i have work permit for 3 years. i want to choose between LLM and work experience. what are my prospects of getting a job in a good legal firm, (provided i pass QLTT), we will go back to India in 2011. I am totally confused because LLM is so expensive. i wish to know if it can increase my earnings substantially, or if it will weigh with employers. also i want to know if good legal jobs exist for people with such backgrounds. thank you very much.

Let me tell you all one thing...particularly those who are coming out of India to do an LLM with the hope of starting an international career in law, that it is next to impossible to find jobs if you are not a candidate from European community member states in the legal sector. I was in a stable job in Mumbai, came out to internationalise my career, did LLM in Europe and came to UK to do PhD and also pass the solicitors exam with the hope of getting a job in UK or Europe but it is not possible. There is a covert racial discrimination against non-EC members. The immigration laws are also very tough and it is next to impossible to get work permits for LLMs etc. So think twice or as many times as you need to before you leave everyhting to come and do an LLM etc and before wasting your or your father's hard earned money. The opportunities in India are abundant and would get even better. LLM from these European and UK universities hardly count in job market unless u want to pursue an academic career but that too is ver discriminatory in its present form

from ur credentials it wud seem tht u can get into oxford, cambridge, lse and ucl... ur preference shud be in this particular order, after the llm u shud give ur qltt and im pretty sure u can land a very good job... yes as ayun said its hard... but i know ppl with just an llb and the bvc from Pakistan working in magic circle firms... if u keep feeling tht ur just another one who wont get anything well then u rly wont... think positive and go for it and besides an llm from a top uni is useful anyway no matter wherever u r in the world... and try and get a first class in the course and i wud be hugely surprised if u dont land a very good job! good luck
