LLM by Research? Or MPhil?

John S

I am an economic consultant currently working in Asia, I am considering studying an LLM or MPhil to enhance my career prospects and so am am better informed about legislative and policy matters that I am increasingly involved in in the course of my work.

My questions are:
i) I have no formal law qualification (my first degree was in philosophy and my second an MSc in economics), but worked for about 4 years as a legal case worker at a law firm, I also have considerable experience of legislative research in Vietnam would this be sufficient?

ii) I would like to leverage the substantial primary research I have already done and undertake an LLM by research, is this possible, or would an MPhil be preferable? Or given no formal qualification in law would an entry level postgrad diploma be more suitable?

iii) I know there are distance leaning courses available, but are there any institutions offering research degrees in law by distance?

iv) What are the best places to study, environmental law, development issues related to law and law in (ex socialist) transitional countries (probably China)?

any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

hi!!
I think you not gonna really have the choice. An LLM is (almost) always compulsory before starting a PHD.
Yet, You can maybe try to apply to such programmes.
You should directly ask to the law school you "target"
