LLB Malaysia and then LLM UK, Can we work in UK after our LLM?

Hi there, if we have an LLB from Malaysia and take an LLM in UK. Are there anything that we need to do to work there? Or are we automatically qualified to work after completion of LLM?

Qualified to work under what exact capacity after completing an LLM in the UK?

If you can manage to first obtain a work permit then perhaps the answer would be 'yes' if you then manage to find yourself a job in a firm in the UK but in case you want to practice law as a solicitor in the UK then the answer is 'no', you cannot practice as a solicitor after just doing a LLM in the UK.

In order to practice as a solicitor in the UK, in case you are from one of the English common law country(s) then you are eligible after passing the QLTT exam (as well as full filling any/all other criterion as set out by the Law Society) and/or pass the GDL/CPE followed by a LPC or BVC programme.

I am surprised on LLMguide again and again to see so much confusion in respect of UK LLMs.

To be absolutely clear: An LLM is in no way formally qualifies students toward becoming an English Solicitor or Barrister.

However, two further points are worth making. First, getting an LLM may well make it easier to obtain legal employment in the UK as you can demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of legal English and common law subjects. Second, usually on successfully completion-and subject to ever-changing immigration rules-it does entitle holders to a two year work visa if you are coming from outside the European Union.

As Reeta says for Malaysian students the best shortest approach to qualification in the UK may well be to take the QLTT. For details of that go to the law society website www.lawsociety.org.uk
