Hi everyone, i had offer frm Manchester for LLM (Int. Business & Commercial Laws) n i hv applied for Visa yesterday only. See the irony of the circumstances today i got to know tht Durhum hs offered me a seat for the same course.
My question is now after applying Visa for Manchester can i switch over to Durhum anyhow and will tht be a gud decision bcs i m having gud reviews frm my seniors about Manchester.
Pls. advice.
Thanks

If I were you, for all practical and ethical reasons, I would definitely not switch from Manchester to Durham. Not only have you accepted Manchester's offer, but a very late withdrawal of your acceptance of the offer (the programme is due for a start in less than one month) looks repugnant -- to me at least. On a more practical note, do you know how long it will take to obtain a Visa letter from Durham? Moreover, do you have any compelling reason for the preference of Durham to Manchester?

I have to admit that I totally agree with tnuchpiam's view...
You need to consider other issues besides the academic part.. Above all is -indeed- the academic but nonetheless there are other matters requiring second thoughts!!!!
I've visited both Durham and Manchester and I can assure you that the latter is far better city wise( facilities, night life, shopping e.t.c).
I'm glad that you are having such dilemmas and you are not just doing the LLM for the heck of it! But going through all the visa trouble again..is it actually worth it?
Best of luck and I hope you made the best choice..
Always listen to your heart. No one else knows what you want.. I know it sounds a cliché but it's true and that is why it is a cliché ( a popular or common thought or idea, that has lost originality, ingenuity, and impact by long overuse)

Sandeep, I hope it is not just me who finds you extremely annoying. At the beginning of the summer it was only YOU who not only climing allegiency to Manchester but also persuading other unsuspecting students to go there saying that it is better than Durham. I myself sent you a message with various linked attached Showing that Durham is a superior place. You never bothered to even acknowlewdge it. Now nearly 1.5 months later you are changing the tune. I believe you really should stick to Manchester. Why? Because you STILL (3 months on) have not reearched the place you applied to. You were given the offer from one of the best colleges (I'll put it higher than Ustinov) and you are none the wiser. You even applied through the agent-I personally believe this practice should be banned as it looks like a visa scam.
Have not bothered doing the application yourself? Your agent also wrote your essays?

I agree with you Banking. It becomes annoying when someone asks a question 6 weeks ago, answers are given, and they claim to have made up their minds. Then 6 weeks later they are asking the same questions.

Exactly, George. Reading Sandeep's posts has made me really appreciate what poor Pucca must be going through. The girl has thoroughly researched her chosen course and university, collected all documents and prepared all papers in advance and did not get her visa for some stupid reason (hopefully she will get it eventually). She is clearly a great student. At the same time somone like Sandeep does not do any research and probably not that bothered and gets his documents. Thanks to agents...

Hey banking pls behave, n dont try to be oversmart n stop being self appointed guardian of ths community. hv i asked u to reply my post ? if u find thm annoying just ignore thm why r u taking pain in replying the same , i hope u hv other works to do.
Its so easy to sit on net n comment anything but hr my 15-20 lacs r on stake n i m free to put any question in ths forum.
who the hell r u to decide whether i hv done any research or not n who hs written my essays. wats d wrong in it if i took help of the consultents to check my documets , thy r not the touts of the high commision who can get u visa easily or earleir it ws all my effort thy hv just scrutinized my documents.
1 more thing , i knw vry well the rankings of both Durhum n Manchester in Rae, Times,n Guardian rankings n thr course structures , n m trying to explore as much as i can frm all sources n meeting seniors passed out frm thses universities n my queries raised hr r based on the reviews gvn by thm.
I never wanted to comment anybody in ths forum personally but yr talk fucking habit compelled me to do the same n i dont mind if u mind anything written above.

Hi Sandeep, could you please avoid SMS posts, as they are really hard to read. I think Banking has a point and you shouldn't act like a silly boy. Stick to Manchester. I'm sure you will like it!

hi sandeep .. i completely agree with you here.. whoever is trying to dissuade you is probably just dont get it that a student can be confused . so even if you have got a better offer from durham you have all the right to consider it even though earlier you were spreading the word about manchester which is obvious because everyone sometimes gets a little titled towars what you have rather than what you not... because lets be honest durham or mancs are not even close to the best universities for law in the uk . sandeep i honestly do not know about durham but whatever happens please do not take up an LLM in Manchester . It would be a serious waste of your hard earned( i assume) money . Its better to not do an LLM than do it from Manchester . As for all those of you who might read this and would like to know the reasons why i and many others like me say so this is not the right forum as i am an ex student and i wish to remain anonymous . I am linking you to 2 groups of the current LLM students where some of my friends are still studying . what i suggest you do is to look at them for yourself and message people you think would give you an honest opinion for the course . As for durham i am sure you can look on facebook/orkut for people studying there and find out yourself. I hope you guys do not regret spending all that money listening to those Professors (who btw are most of the time current Phd students in the same UNI which is disgusting) and take a smart decision as i know how you are excited now about going to the UK but trust me in a few months you would regret it if you do not think now ...... Please look up the following Facebook links of the fb groups i was talking about . All the best in Life . http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=54016929366

as for the visa problem dont really bother about it as its not a big deal as long as you are going to be studying .. you do not need to reapply for a visa... a visa is given for going to the uk not manchester or durham .... all you need to do is inform the consulate just to be safe and you can even do it after you come here .. no one is gonna trace you or deport for something so smalll .. relax

Its true am confused b/w these two universities and earlier i had decided for manchester but so far in ths forum i hv never tried to convince anybody to prefer Manchester to durhum , i hv always written tht i am choosing machester bcs of its modules and life and because i am in touch with 2-3 guys and meeting them personally for their reviews.i have no frnds in durhum but last week i have met 2 guys from durhum university and got their reviews like ....... its 4th ranking in RAE , and UK firms prefer durhum guys, their research faculty etc. but on the other hand tht the city is very small n u'll find it difficult to find a part time job and wont get much to socialize. well lets see wat happens i can take right decisions on right time.

This is exactly the point ManchesterLLM. People have been telling Sandeep the same for months. Also Durham is easily the top 5 university in the UK, law or no law. Most employers look at the overall rating anbd reputation. The college Sandeep got is a very prestigious one, the "dream" college for public school guys, maybe second only to St Chad. People across the world dream of going there, prepare the documentation in advance and do not get in. Sandeep is very lucky...and he does not really realise it. Purely because he did not bother to read about the place...Even Wikipedia would be better than nothing...

I agree with Banking. Please the sms posting thing has to stop ! I am amazed though how poor english can get you to a so prestigious university like Manchester!!! The posts are there please have a look and if I'm wrong I'll apologize.
Universities only see how good grades you got in your country e.t.c but they don't really realize HOW ARE YOU GOING TO WRITE AN ESSAY WITH THESE SPELLING MISTAKES? Manchester is a great place to study as aforesaid. Agents are doing a great job by the way !!!!!!!!!!
Manchester is an excellent university and you should consider yourself lucky. Be grateful for what you have for god sake !!!!!!!
You 'd better not write in the exams sms posting (btw, wtf, donno, wat, yrself, durhum, frnds).
thank you and goodbye !

Sandeep, no offense meant. Durham and Manchester are both reputed universities, so you should be happy to have the choice between them.
I agree that this a place where anyone can ask any questions about LLM programs. I think what annoys some users here is not your level of English (most people here aren't native speakers), but that you are asking the same questions again and again (without seeming to pay attention to the answers given) and that you don't even take the effort to spell out words (you write "frnds" instead of "friends", "u" instead of "you", "ths" instead of "this" etc.). That's what I meant with SMS posts. You don't even take the time to spell "Durham" correctly.
I'm sure there are some other users here who didn't make it into Durham and wonder whether it's fair that someone who doesn't seem to know the name of the school got accepted with the help of an agent.

I feel very happy now to see that many, if not most, young people do not like an SMS-style of writing (I belong to an older generation). I thought this was the way young people liked to communicate with one another. Of course, even if most of them actually do, it is none of my businesss. I only wonder whether, in the case of those who like the SMS style, it does take a far greater effort to write "friends", for instance, instead of "frnds"?

While Durham is a top university, the Durham LLM isn't good in itself- basically you're just paying for the brand name on your certificate, but if you're confident that's all you need to get your desired job then go for it. But otherwise, check out the actual content of the Durham LLM - it's pretty woeful for choice of courses, and are a million miles away from the cutting-edge modules offered by all four of the UoL colleges and some other uni's.
At least Manchester has better choice of modules available (and also a great in-house careers advisor). On the negative side, Manchester is well-known for using GTAs. Manchester's also highly regarded amongst law firms and I very much doubt Durham LLMs have the edge over Manchester LLMs. If you're paying international fees be careful where you choose and why!
