GDL and career prospects

Milly

Hi everyone,
I am 21, French and finishing my Master in translation and interpreting in French and Spanish this year as well as doing a Distance learning French law LLM at the same time ( 2nd year, Université de la Sorbonne ). I am planning on doing a GDL next year at Northumbria.

My question is would I be able to find a position as a French law specialist in the UK (I am thinking multilingual job in a big company) having a GDL and what could I do after the GDL ?
Considering the gloomy career prospects I am starting to think I am too demanding !! hehe

Any great ideas ?? :D
Merci !!
Emilie

In my opinion there is no chance in these times to get a job here for a foreign lawyer.....

There is no chance for a domestic lawyer either :)

Unless you're a creme de la creme product of your own country's legal machine I wouldn't advise coming to the UK as there are no (or few) jobs for lawyers or trainees.

A GDL will not get you a job, but only bring you up to speed with British law graduates. You then face the LPC and a two year training contract.

You may also want to consider the status of Northumbria. Frankly, it isn't really known as a good law school. If you want to do your GDL, you'd be better off at the College of Law, BPP, or Nottingham; these institutions are favoured by the leading law firms.

Thanks for your answers.
I know Northumbria is not the best ever law school, but I did my BA in Applied Modern Languages there and I really enjoyed it and that is where I would like to be for the next 5 years at least.
Regarding the labour market, I know I'm not worth anything with my masters in translation and my French law hehe.
Therefore, let's say I'm planning to study for another 2 or 3 years and specialize in business/contract law in the UK like I did in France, would doing my GDL and then the LPC with the appropriate modules be any helpful ?
I am not hoping to have a 30k salary I'd be happy with half to start with ! :D
Because the other possibility that I have is getting into social work having a "Law+foreign languages" profile, ( I am working for the Spanish Immigration office at the moment.) but translating contracts or forms for example is just so boring and I am craving for team work !

Thanks again !

Hey guys...Can you suggest about what kind of training contract should I search for?

Effectively, I have 3 years (Full time) work experience as legal Trainee in India.

I have applied for GDL in College of Law, BPP and City. I have already received an unconditional offer from College of Law...?

After that I wish to take on LPC at the same institution.

If I apply right now for Training Contract before starting with my GDL in September 2009....Can someone suggest will I get a training contract or not ???
What kind of firm should I look for...and what kind of salary can I expect in such a bad market.

Should you do an LL.M. or a GDL?

Article Nov 14, 2019

An LL.M. is valuable, but it does not give you the right to practice law in the UK. A GDL does.
