Hi, I have received an offer for UCL conditional on me finishing my current degree with upper second class honours. The only thing is, I am from Western Australia, and we don't do honours like that (to get honours on a degree, you have to do an extra 12 months study and a dissertation, and if you have one then you can go straight to PhD without a Masters).
Does anyone know what percentage average you need for upper second class honours? I'm in my final semester, so I can't really do much to raise my average a lot, and I'm wondering if, given that they have most of my grades, they would have made me an offer if my grades weren't good enough? Any ideas?
Thanks!

I'm in the same boat as you (studying in South Africa) where our 'honours' system works differently.
Depending on how they weigh your grades, your average in grades (for your final year) must equal 60% or above to qualify as an 'Upper Second' according to the UK system.
I stand to be corrected but that's what I've gathered from the research I've done.
Oh, by the way, are you planning to start in September this year, or did you apply for September 2011?
I ask because when I e-mailed SOAS they told me that if I'm looking to apply for September 2011 enrollment, they only start accepting applications in August, so I assumed the other universities I'm looking at would employ the same policy (UCL, KCL, QMUL and City).

Yeah, its a bit confusing, because I have googled it and am not finding any definitive answer. I spoke to UCL and they told me I would need to send in my transcript and they would try and decide based on that, or to call my current university. But when I called my current university, they told me they didn't help with things like that because "we prefer you do post graduate studies through us". Big help!! So I suppose I will have to send in my transcript and hope for the best!
I'm planning to start Sept this year, which is why it's a little tricky because (going on how slow the admissions process has been- my app was complete in Feb and I got my offer letter today) it will take them ages to decide if my grades qualify me. So I will be twisting in the wind a bit longer I guess!

Hey Kathryn,
I was wondering what LLM did you apply for and how UCL informed you of your offer. I applied for the LLM in Human Rights and I haven't heard back from them. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I applied in Jan (but by post, so all my stuff didn't get there until Feb) and then I got an email telling me I had been recommended for the program at the end of April, then my letter end of May.
I'm also doing the LLM in Human Rights (hopefully!). If it's been a while, try calling- they had put my application in the "not complete pile" by mistake, and it was only through some harrassment by me that they realised it was complete and processed it.
Good luck!

Just one observation, I don't think you can apply for specific UCL LLMs. As I recall, you apply for the general LLM and your specialisation will be chosen in accordance with the modules you enrol on once you get to London... you do have, however, to give in the personal statement an idea of the specialisation you want to pursue when they ask you to point out the modules you plan to enrol in...

Kathryn, so your offer is for an upper second class honour? They did not state a specific percentage you have to get? Because in the UK an upper second class honour is between 60-69% which is quite achievable.
I had two friends who went to Monash for an exchange sememster. They got grades which were around 75-80% on the Australian grading system and the grades were dropped by about 5-10% I think. Hope that helps!!
