I currently hold phD offers from both Edinburgh and KCL. My area of expertise is in legal theory.
I'm trying to make a decision and would like to solicit opinions from the board.
1) How is the reputation of each of these schools and is there a wide gulf between the 2?
2) For current phD students, how is the hiring process for academic posts? Does it make a difference whether the degree is from Edinburgh or KCL?
3)What is the strenght of the legal philosophy department in either of these schools?
4) How are the facilities?
5) Is there any opportunity to take classes in other departments, philosophy in particular.
Thanks

Go to the one that offers you the best supervisor(s), research training and funding package. In terms of status, they are roughly on par.

Absolutely agreeing with Kerfuffle's suggestion, I just would like to add, first, that Kerfuffle must surely mean "the best supervisor(s)" in your chosen area of specialisation and, second, that you might have to decide, having weighed their respective pros and cons, if you would love to live in London or the beautiful capital city of Scotland. My personal choice will definitely be Edinburgh!

Legal Theory in Edinburgh is definitely a great way to go if you choose good LT supervisors. Neil Walker is here and he seems to be anywhere and everywhere that pertains to LT. There are also other fantastic faculty advisors like Zenon Bankowski, Burkhard Schafer and Claudio Michelon. http://www.law.ed.ac.uk/legaltheory/
Also, committing 3 years as a PhD student to a city you'll find the cost of living far less in Edinburgh. Those £8 underground rides can add up in London whereas you can walk just about everywhere in Edinburgh.
As far as facilities, I am a PhD student at Edinburgh and I find them great. There are shared offices (refurbed last year!) and a thriving PhD community. Everyone makes a great effort to be supportive.
Good luck with your decision.

By "best supervisor", I mean "best" in a number of respects: meets your research needs, high profile in his/her field, has a good rapport with you, and has a commitment to students.
... to clarify on behalf of Boris ;) underground rides don't cost £8. Daily journeys are capped around the £4 mark for students.
In terms of quality of living, I'd opt for Edinburgh though!
