Hi,

I thought I'd post about Second Life today to see if any of the LLM-guide users here are also present in the 3-D virtual world.

Second Life (http://secondlife.com/), if you don't already know what it is, is a virtual networking environment (at least that's how I see it).

There has been lots of news coverage about the various aspects of Second Life particulary the economy (such as http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2007/02/16/cclife16.xml), but here at The University of Edinburgh, we're interested to see how it can be used to assist the delivery of primarily distance learning education. More generally, in Second Life you can build your own items, you can chat, play other people's games (or build your own), conduct research, join debates and discussions, watch concerts, participate in seminars and watch lectures.

Our IT Law class (http://www.law.ed.ac.uk/distancelearning/programme/Modules.htm) is spending a little bit of time investigating the issues of virtual worlds and jurisdiction, and Second Life is mentioned.

The University of Edinburgh also created a small-campus in Second Life, which has been used for some time to conduct seminars for one of our distance learning programmes (the eMSC in e-learning http://www.education.ed.ac.uk/e-learning/).

I thought that given the increasing awareness of SL and the University's history with the world, it was high-time I made a University friendly avatar. So, if any LLM-Guide.com readers are involved in Second Life, feel free to add "Eld Mills" to your address book!

I don't spend a lot of time in the world, but if you're particularly keen to have a chat about LL.Ms and The University of Edinburgh's LL.M via e-learning specifically, then please don't hesitate to contact me - either as "Eld Mills" in SL or as Cmiller here on the LLM-guide.com, to arrange a time and place to meet with you.

Thanks,

Colin.
