Edinburgh LLM IN LAW

sid.menon

Hey guys,
I've got conditional offer from Edinburgh for IPR. Well now i have second thoughts about taking up IPR as my core subject. I mailed the university asking to change my preference to LLM in "Law", so that i could choose different modules rather than concentrating on a single subject. Is that a gud choice?? I hope the University gives me a positive reply.
If they do,I am thinking of combining "company law" as well as "Law of International trade", followed by 2 subjects with 20 credits each in my program, would that be a good move???
would be great if you could leave in your suggestions.
Thank you in advance

Sid,

I don't think that changing the LLM from "IPR" to "Law" will be a problem. As far as I remember, last year the students of LLM in Commercial Law were given preference in signing up for "Company Law". I am not sure if the "General LLM" students had such priority as well. Therefore, you should contact the student office in order to make sure what LLM should you choose in order to have priority in signing up for those courses.

Best,
M

I would also be surprised if they care at all who studies what. My understanding of most LL.M. programs is that they make admissions decisions with the knowledge that some people (and maybe even a lot of people) will change their concentration.

Wait until you have to select courses, I assume? That would make sense, and would also seem to suggest that changing concentrations would not be a problem.

No. I rang up the post grad office and asked them whether i could change my current concentration ie IPR to Commercial law. They said it is generally possible. But, It seems they want to check it with the commercial law department also.
I am waiting for their response.

Just an FYI regarding why it is not always so simple to change (though happy it was sorted for you sid.menon). There are limited spaces on each specific programme due to the optimal numbers in the seminars and the overall capacity of a law school postgraduate programme. At the LLM level it is far better to have controlled numbers so that the discussion format (at least at Edinburgh) works well. With too many people in a class the courses run the risk of being less interactive and, due to lack of space in seminar rooms, too crowded. If loads of people opt for a particular course then they will often have to split the course into two, which happened this year with multiple courses on the Edinburgh LLM, particularly in international subjects. Not a serious problem except for time constraints and course overlaps that are caused. Anyway, just wanted to provide a small bit of insight.
