Anyone doing an MST at Oxford?

jw

Hey folks - most on here appear to have applied to do the BCL at Oxford. Of course, this makes sense as it is an older, prestigious degree.

However, I am wondering if anyone on this board applied to do an MST at Oxford?

And if so, whether they had heard anything.

You have probably heard one way or the other by now - but yes, I have applied, and yes, I have gotten my acceptance letter. While the BCL may be more prestigious, I think the MSt has more to offer those of us interested in the specific area of human rights law. JW - have you accepted a place in the MST program?

Hey KGov. I'm from Toronto as well. What a coincidence. I've been out of the country for most of the year and have returned recently.

Are you guys referring to the Mst in International Human Rights Law offered by the Continuing Education Dept. or the Mst in Legal Research offered by the Law Faculty? If you guys are referring to the former, I did consider that at one time but decided against it since it takes two years to complete the program. Still, I am curious as to what sort of academic credentials the dept. looks for in its candidates?

bobbiehill - Hmmm, I'm not really sure - I got an A- average in law school, won a number of awards, clerked at a superior level trial court, and have been practicing Consitutional law for the year since my call to the bar. Obviously there's more to my CV, but my guess is that those are the highlights as far as admission goes.

s_r - very glad to have a connection to someone entering the same program. what law school did you go to? do you know anyone who has already done the program?

Hey KGov. I studied law at Osgoode. Graduated in 2005, articled with MAG and spent the last 7 months in East Africa. Where did you study?

Sorry, I missed the last question. As for knowing anyone who has studied in this program; not personally. However, a friend of mine was working with someone who was in the program and should be completing this summer. In fact, she's attending the summer session as we speak. I'm hoping my friend can introduce me to her when she returns.

I'll try to figure this board out and send you my email addy via "pm".

Hey Kgov and S_R,

Glad to see your posts here. Count in another Canadian.

Your respective backgrounds are impressive. I'm curious to learn how each of you found out about the program.

Anyone else out there taking the Mst, or a grad of the same?

Did the MSt this past year and was also admitted to the doctoral program (after successfully defending my thesis).

Independent research isn't for everyone, but I can tell you it was for me. Plus, Oxford was beautiful. Students at my college friendly. Just a fantastic year.

I applied for this course for 2010/2011 but my application was rejected. I'm a Chartered Accountant and an Attorney-at-Law by profession with over twelve years of experience in practise and in the industry. I have worked for two big 4 audit firms in the country playing key roles. My research proposal was relating to Corporate Governance and its importance in light of the recent global economic recession. I don't understand why my application was rejected since the success rate appears to be quite high for Legal Research than the taught degrees. Can some one who has previously done this course/ has been successful with their application for 2011 share your views with regard to their selection criteria for this course? I believe that your views will be useful for my application to LSE.
