Aberdeen or Edinburgh?

Hey....

An international commercial law LLM from aberdeen or Innovation,Technology and Law from Edinburgh??? Which is better??

And what do u think are the best universities in scotland?
Edinburgh offers a commercial law but its not international in perspective i guess. so how far is it good for a student from India??

Hi llm_aspirant,

Don't really know much about commercial law and its international perspective in Edinburgh, but I've been told that Edinburgh is a very good law school as far as international law is concerned. Judging by this, I suppose it's fair to say that includes international commercial law? Hope this helps!
Edinburgh also ranks very high up the current universities league table for law. =)
I've applied to Edinburgh but looking to do a general LLM.
Good luck!

Don't know when I'll hear from them..probably in a couple of months i suppose!
As to the rankings, t depends on which guide you're looking at. Times has ranked Aberdeen higher than Edinburgh, but Guardian's guide shows the opposite.
Both are great unis; but choice is really up to you - you may wanna consider the cost of living, availability of scholarships, programmes offered/suits you etc.
I chose Edinburgh as it has a great reputation for international law although i'm looking to do a general llm to widen my range of module options.

Hello!

Currently I am doing LLM in Commercial Law at Edinburgh. I take two courses from Commercial Law and one course from Innovation, Technology and Law. So you can combine courses. You can take one course not from your LLM.

I am very happy to study in the University of Edinburgh. I have traveled a lot around Scotland and I am sure that Edinburgh is the best University. It's a perfect combination of serious studies and fun! Edinburgh is fantastic city, very beautiful, and there are so many things to do here! Festivals take place around the whole year.

The University is very international and friendly University. There are many societies run by students here. The Sport Centre is great. It's more than I could even expect.

If you have any further questions, I will be happy to advise you.

All the best!!!

Both of them are top law schools. Some rankings have Edinburg higher than Aberdeen, but others have Aberdeen higher than Edinburg. In brief, Edinburgh ranks from top 5 to top 10, with Aberdeen penetrating top 2, top 5 and only in Guardian 10th position. Ofcourse, all things considered, your choices must rely on the specific llm programme you want to attend.
If you want to do criminal law e.g. then go to Edinburgh. Traditionally it is one of the best.
Public International Law is also one of the best , if not the best imo.
The same for European.
Generally a top uni.

But if you think about Energy, Oil, Commercial or Private International Law Go to Aberdeen. Their networking with companies, public bodies and administration has been very fruitful which means

a It is almost out of the question you don't get a well paid job right after finishing it.

b You get yourself the chance to meet oil barons, spokesmen and so on ...since they favor their graduates.

Just an advice.
Scotland has great universities and absolutely great law and medical schools.

Don't go to London because it is London.

Especially as regards to Law, and not taking into account rankings etc, they have a tradition of excellent teaching quality and job prospects traced back 3 centuries ago.

This is a similiar question asked by another poster so I am giving the same answer...Having worked as a legal education consultant before returning to do my PhD at Edinburgh (where I also did an LLM) I can tell you that more important than rankings (as they vary from journal to journal) are the faculty and resources available at the institution you choose. If you are truly interested in intellectual property and technology law then you cannot beat Edinburgh. Key faculty such as Waelde, Laurie and MacQueen are top in their field and extremely supportive of students. The availability of the AHRC Research Centre for Studies in Intellectual Property and Technology Law www.law.ed.ac.uk/ahrc/ is unique to Edinburgh and provides a wealth of information and opportunity for students. There is also an excellent online journal specific to the topics covered by this particular LLM which can be found at www.law.ed.ac.uk/ahrc/script-ed/ .
I have no knowledge of the Aberdeen programme but know that the Edinburgh programme is first rate! Plus, most people who attended Aberdeen from my circle of friends ended up at Edinburgh eventually--and very happily I might add!
