I have just been offered a place at the University of Nottingham (LLM in Criminal Justice) but someone has written that Nottingham Law School (NTU) is much better with regard to postgraduate studies. I am extremely confused as I thought I am applying to a very good univeristy. Any opinions about LLM in Criminal Justice at the Univeristy of Nottingham (School of Law)?

Nottingham is best for LPC, GDL and LLM ... It is among top ( 10 ) law schools in UK.... I can not say about specialist ( subjectwise) LLM ranking.... but it is good in Commercial laws...

I query the basis on which Nicemanin suggests that NTU is in the top 10 law schools in the UK. Whilst it has a very good reputation for vocational programmes, I am not sure that this translates into an equal reputation for academic programmes. Whilst I know nothing about the specific subject matter of the LLM in question, given the disparity in research culture (which is very wide between the 2 institutions no matter how you interpret the RAE with NTU putting in what seems to be a poorer performance than in 2000) in my view Nottingham University would be a better bet for an academic programme.

Thanks a lot for your comment Imwoods!I have just checked the entry requirements for NTU and University of Nottingham LLM and the former requires 2.2 whereas the latter 2.1. It means it is much easier to get to NTU. Moreover, the modules I can choose at Nottingham Uni are more interestic for me as I do not really want to do International Criminal Law dimension. Thus, I will probably stick to what I just got. Anyway, Nottingham is not my first choice as I am still waiting for LSE, UCL and KCL to reply. I have completed my applications this week so it will take so time but at least I have got a place (I applied only to those four aforementioned).
I will surely consider NTU for BVC the year after.
Thanks for your help!!!!

Just to confirm what you now know, NTU is not anywhere near the top 10 UK universities for academic law. Nottm, on the other hand, is a fine law school with a surprising amount of leading academics.

MateuszGrucki, I am currently studying the LLM in Criminal Justice at the University of Nottingham, and as an academic programme this is regarded as more prestigious than those offered by the Nottingham Law School run by Nottingham Trent University. NLS at NTU offers vocational programmes that are well regarded in practice, however as an academic institution it lags some way behind the University of Nottingham (currently ranked 4th as a school of law in the university rankings).

There should only be one school to be considered in this thread - The University of Nottingham.

Please be aware that usually these rankings are for undergraduates programmes only and in addition not specific for one course. Postgraduate programmes (LLM, GDL, LPC, BVC) are an entirely different issue as the courses are much smaller and in general are full of international students (mainly from continental Europe and Asia). In addition, some lecturers only teach on undergraduate programmes whereas others are specialised on postgrads. So, I guess one should be very careful with an "overall" ranking of a law school (especially as regards such a huge law school as NLS offering every kind of course!)

Hi MateuszGrucki,

I'm doing an LLM in Criminal Justice at The University of Nottingham . I applied to + was accepted by UCL + Kings, UCL didnt have an Open Day, so I went to Kings. During the first 2 weeks so many lectures were cancelled, the admin was awful etc so I transferred to the University of Nottingham. Im absolutely sure I made the right choice, the admin + "initiation" + support networks are great, the professors who teach us on the LLM are world authorities, and the LLM from Nottingham University is recognised all over the world - everyone seems to get a job with the UN or an NGO after!

good luck /will

Hi Joseph,

Sorry to ask you, but as far as criminal justice LLMs how would you rate LSE`s LLM and Oxford M.Jur or Oxford Msc in criminology(specially regarding job prospects).

Thank you
