Bar exam after JSD?

Azerty

Hey everyone,

I would like to sit the US bar exam (preferably in NY) but am not so keen on doing an LLM because I already have two masters (one of which is a European LLM). Does anyone know whether it's possible to take the bar exam after doing a JSD at a US law school?

Thanks!

Not possible. Even an LLM is touch and go depending on the state (NY is good for that).

Hey jsd,

Do you happen to know if it is possible to take the bar exam after both LLM and JSD in an American university?
I am planning to continue to JSD after completing the LLM studies. But I can't figure out if the requirements for the bar exam stay the same for someone with a JSD (Introduction to American Law, Legal Research and Writing course, pro-bono hours, etc.)..

Thanks

I'm not fully able to fathom you. But eligibility for the bar varies according to the state. A few of the well known states such as NY allow non-JDs to sit for the bar exam if they complete a two semester LLM AND pass some courses. A few let non-US lawyers qualified at their home bar to sit the exam. Your JSD will most likely be immaterial to the determination of eligibility. Have a look at the homepage of the state bar where you want to be qualified.
