I got my licence three years ago and since then have been working for a small chambers in business/ media law. I applied to various international law firms as this was always my dream. So far I had no success. Now I am thinking about to pursue an LLM in the UK or US to go the next step in my law career. Do you believe this will broaden my chances of landing a job in an international law firm?

Hi Karlaish,
An LLM is a one-year, full-time professional degree that is internationally recognized. As with any other masters program in the academic world, an LLM may help you further your career. The post-graduate degree can help lawyers / you to further specialize in an area of law in which you have practised. It can also open doors to teaching, professional research, and policy work. Moreover, students can truly benefit from the set of experiences within classroom.

Hello Karlaish,
Do you believe this will broaden my chances of landing a job in an international law firm?
If LLM in the UK or US = Ivy League or Oxbridge -> yes.
A heavily specialized LLM from a second-tier university with close industry links and good reputation in this area -> yes.
Otherwise -> probably not.
Bye

Flori: Ivy League are not the only first-tier universities. In other words, there other excellent options that are considered first-tier universities, such as BU or GW that could help you land in your dream job. However, as the economy isn't the best nowadays, that possibility is difficult either you studied at an Ivy League University or not.
Good luck Karlaish!

Many of the LLM graduates are returning to their home countries for their further career in law.
Whilst there are certainly other excellent first-tier universities, their reputation outside the US will not match the reputation held by their Ivy league counterparts.

Many thanks for your contributions. So far I consider an LL.M. in the US but do not know if I can afford a first-tier University. I will look into scholarships before I will make a decision.
