LLM in Utrecht, Leiden, Essex, Galway or E.MA

danny7k

Is there anybody admitted to LLM in International Criminal Law and Human Rights or in Public international Law in Utrecht, Leiden, Essex, E.MA, Vienna and Galway? Which one did you choose and why?

What are the pros and cons?

I have been made an offer from Utrecht and Galway still waiting for the response from the others.

If you have studied at the respective universities or you are standing before the decision I would appreciate to know your opinion.

Thanks a lot

Danny

Me too I've received an offer from Galway and Utrecht in the same field! I'm still evaluating.. but I think I will choose Utrecht.. Galway is a too small city in the middle of nowhere. Yes, Shabas is a very good teacher, but I think that Utrecht benefits from the location near The Hague. Anyway I have only 7 days to answer to Galway!
The question for me is: Utrecht, Leiden or Amsterdam?

Hi Nicolo,

It is good to find someone who is planning to study the same programme.
In respect of Galway - well Ive got the same feelings I mean they have prof. Shabbas, Cavanaugh and the subjects look tailored and in depth but on the other side Galway look pretty small - I am not sure about some work / internship options during the study.
Leiden sounds very interesting. And Amsterdam? I dont know. They have almost nothnig on their website. they didnt persuade me.
With regard to Utrecht. I see advantages like the location near to Haag, Amsterdam, Brussels, Luxembourgh and internships. But I dont know aboout their acamdemic staff and other issues.
E.g. how many students do they admit?
What do you think about E.MA, Essex and Vienna?

It would be good to stay in touch. I have sent you Nicolo personal message but Iam not sure whether you received it or not?

Let me know.

Danny

No, i didn't received any message! But me too I'm happy to find someone who is planning to do the same llm!

So: Utrecht is a very good university, the academic staff SEEMS good but i really don't know for sure.. I think they admit around 25 30 people.

Leiden WAS a very good university, but a lot of teachers seem to have moved to Amsterdam.

So now Amsterdam, in my personal opinion it's the best option, but they admit only 12 persons i think.

I don't know nothing about essex and vienna, but i think that Holland is the best option for the International criminal law. They are very active in the field!

Danny,

I chose the Program at the Vienna Law School because of the biographies and publication lists of the professors. I decided to do the LL.M. International Legal Studies because I'm interested in International Economic Law (rather than only Business Law) as well as particularly Investment Arbitration. The professors teaching here in Vienna are soooo experienced (and well known),
In addition, the program costs less than many others, and Vienna is a beautiful city where the offer on academic talks and lectures is larger and wide-ranged. IT is a really very intellectual and thinking city. The people really read MANY high quality magazines if you go and listen to lectures at the University, Diplomatic Academy, or Institutes like the IWM (Institut für Wissenschaft vom Menschen). Many lectures are in English, so didn't have to learn any German for it.

For those of you starting a postgraduate human rights course in October, the Essex Human Rights Alumni Association has created a Facebook group. Ffeel free to join it! http://www.facebook.com/groups/134672879958859.

And if you have any question about the course, feel free to contact me. I can only recommend Essex, it's an incredible place for human rights (and I can speak from experience...)

I am interested in a broad practice in activism and research in human rights. I have a law degree from Ecuador. I want to study in Essex, but should I apply for the LLM or the MA? Thanks!
