How are you funding your LLM?

Poppet

There's so many people here searching for scholarships and asking questions about them (posts which I see often have no responses), and then I see other people accepting admission offers in countries very, very far from their homes, where tuition is extremely high. It's obviously a personal question, but I'm curious: how are you planning on funding your LLM?

I'll go first. I'm a Canadian, and I intend to rely on government student loans, private bank loans, and hopefully government scholarships (though I suspect these will be minimal.) I don't anticipate (or at least can't plan for) scholarships from the schools themselves, especially since I am coming from a developed country. So I am going to be in quite a bit of debt, it seems. Such is the price of the dream ($50-60k?) I am also grudgingly contemplating delaying my application for a year to save up the money.

So: how are YOU funding it? Are you dependent on scholarships? Do you have access to bursaries? Are you relying on the help of friends or family, or have you saved up the money? How are you handling funding the notoriously-expensive LLM to achieve your dream?

No one has so far answered you so may I be the first :)

I have applied only to an LLM-program without any tuition fee. So Im saving a lot because of that. Otherwise I have not applied for any scholarships, I might do that if I get the place. I have saved some money and I hope to get some part time job sowewhere. But... as said... dont know the results yet...

As for me I relyed solely on to scholarships sponsored by different organizations. I got one sponsored by my home country. I am happy now.

Obviously, I could not afford such expensive education ($60-70,000) without it.

Well, i've been thinkin in a long therm plan to fund my LLM.

First, I'm concerning about my grades, I graduated last year as a 1st. of the class, but I'm wondering if that alone is enough to get a scholarship (don't have any significant work experience yet), how can I enforce that aspect of my CV without wasting my time in jobs that the review board wont even consider???????

I still haven't thought about financial resources, but correct me if i'm wrong, I think the scholarship will suport most of my expenses. right?????

Well, i've been wondering about UK or US LLM, I think costs will be deciding. May be you can guide me in that aspect too???

Hope to get some helpful advice.

Thanks.

Well, I started this post so that people can talk about funding options, but some research is always going to be expected on your end too. No one can tell you if a scholarship will support most of your expenses because we don't know who you are, where you are applying ("Oxbridge" is pretty broad), where you are coming from, what kind of scholarships you are eligible for, and which you will even get. Maybe your marks will be high enough, but there's not nearly enough information here for anyone to advise you.

Some tips:
- Ask the school directly what their funding options are, whether they give out entrance scholarships or bursaries and what their requirements are.
- Contact the embassy of the state you are applying to and see if they have specific scholarships that you are eligible for.

- Check with your own government to see if they have loans, scholarships or grant/bursary applications and what their requirements are.
