Duke vs. Georgetown - detailed comparison

GG2929

Hi everyone,

I've been accepted by both unis and am struggling to decide between the two. I am an attorney at its fifth year of law firm practice interested in general corporate and international business law. here is a summary of my reasoning/opinion about each school:

1. Duke: Small sized llm group (80 llms), more individualized attention to each student, easy to form friendships etc. Georgetown: 230 llms
2. Georgetown: more networking opportunities due to the DC location, nearby major law firms, financial institutions etc; plus practitioners teaching as adjunct professors is a plus
3. Duke: because I have a few friends currently studying at Duke, I know that Durham is a small but fun place to be and living is very affordable whereas in DC it will probably be more expensive. my friends at duke seem to have had the best year of their lives there yet I do not know much about the life in DC.
4. Georgetown: externship opportunities further to the networking option
5. Georgetown: considered to be among the best in terms of international trade and WTO law and I am also interested in investment law.
6. Duke: is 3 spots higher in US news ranking yet considered/known as a Top10 law school whereas Georgetown is 14th.
7. Georgetown: has a better international reputation - is it?
8. Though I am not 100% sure, Duke llms seem to be more successful in NY Bar Exam.
9. Duke: has a more beautiful campus and GULC is not in the main campus.

I have listed some of the information I gathered and would very much love to hear the opinion of others on these two schools and what I have discussed above.

Hello,
As turkish kid i had the same problem, i believe it is all about your heart not your mind. After all, they are almost same. They got their strong sides and weak sides. To me, duke is slightly better school, However i do not think there is a big difference between them. All i can say is just ask yourself that where you want to live for a one year.
If you want more detailed answers, pm me. I got connections from both schools and i would like to share infos with you.
Allah'a emanet ol:)

Hi there.... don't put a lot of weight on what I'm saying but I'd choose Duke. In Europe (at least where I am), Duke "seems" to have the upper hand. In other parts of the world.... can't say.

Hi Osman...Congratulation on Duke!!!...It's an excellent law school with an extremely intimate program (only 86 students)...Contrary to what you think, Duke actually has the best post LL.M support for its LL.M graduates...They have dedicated staff only to guide LL.M students unlike other law schools which club LL.M's with JD's, Duke recognises LL.M's as having separate requirements....Duke is ranked higher than Georgetown as well...so it only counts if you're going to Georgetown for those specific courses for which it is renowned...Else overall Duke enjoys a better reputation being in the top 10...Add to that excellent network with law firms in New York and a healthy pass percentage at the NY Bar exam, and you have an amazing law school in Duke....Although Durham is not DC, Georgetown is not Duke either....so take your pick....I also got through Virginia which is higher ranked but has little reputation outside America...Duke has a great reputation even here in India...Duke is overall the better school...Only 86 high quality students...friendships for life and personally known to your professors....rest is up to you...We can stay in touch...Are you on BBM or skype? And might I add Duke is WAY WAY BETTER THAN GEORGE WASHINGTON...Had to post here since my P.M. to you wasn't going through...You can P.M. me your details...
