Soon I will need to send my applications and most of the programmes have as a requirement a motivation letter or statement of purpose. Could you give some tips?

Motivation letters or statements of purpose are quite individual in nature. You usually want to state your goals and how that particular program will help you achieve such goals. For example, stress the uniqueness of the program or the opportunity to study under a particular professor who researches a specific topic you are interested in etc.

Talk about your strengths and don't be afraid to address your weaknesses without dwelling on them. You also want to give the impression that the program you are applying to, is your first choice. You want to make them want you. You have to stand out.
