I am a present student at IHEID and would like to warn everyone who might be interested in coming here not to do so. The place is a complete shambles, especially the law department.
The scholarship offers are a gross deception. If you intend to come here to do the 2-year LLM on a IHEID scholarship, you can forget about it being renewed for the second year. They hook you in with the promise of funding or a tuition waiver for a year with an implicit offer of renewal if you meet the grades and financial necessity, and then take it away in the second year regardless of either of these factors, precisely when you need to work on your thesis or MPT (for PhD students).
Secondly, if you intend to carry on to do your PhD here, note that the PhDs offered by IHEID leave you sorely unqualified to take up any kind of academic position. There is NO opportunity to teach: the so-called "Teaching Assistantships" are purely secretarial jobs, and underpaid ones at that. If you take one, it is likely you will not be able to complete your PhD on time. For the avoidance of doubt, IHEID is not interested in producing research or academics. Their main business is in printing qualifications for UN or IGO bureaucrats to hang on their wall so they can get a pay raise.
Finally - the cherry on the cake - is that the law department is the only department in the entire institute that expressly forbids its students from using the desks in the department. That means that neither the Masters nor even the PhD students have a workspace! This might not seem big, but it is the perfect example of the boundless contempt the director of the Law Department has for the students in his department.
