I am a JD preparing to apply to a PhD program in EU law at a European university. An LL.M. in European law helps my admission chances, gives me the chance to network and to incubate my PhD project, which is in EU external relations. Both Ghent and Leiden have European law LL.M.s. Any thought as to which is a better foundation for preparing for a PhD?
Ghent or Leiden?

Leiden is more prestigious but some posts at this website say that Holland is not a very good place to live in and that LLMs there are like a Bachelor (not difficult enough, very soft programs). Besides, some students say that Dutch teachers give higher grades to Dutch students than to foreign students just for that fact, so no matter how hard you try, as a foreign student all you can get is a B.
However, Ghent is not very well known abroad, but I might be a good university!

I read this post and it is inaccurate.
Leiden's LLM is not similar to an undergraduate programme. On the contrary, this rebut regards Leiden's regular LLM programmes. Properly explained here: http://www.law.leiden.edu/prospectivestudents/llm-programmes/studying-law-in-leiden.html. Note that there are two completely different subcategories for LLM at Leiden. Also, LLMGuide breaks down the confusion here: http://www.llm-guide.com/university/219/leiden-university-leiden-law-school.
Now for the Dutch professors giving high marks to Dutch students. I cannot vouch for that claim. Nevertheless, from what was read upon several post regarding the Netherlands. It seems, Erasmus (Rotterdam) gets majority of the complaints despite being an international student hub. For people who apply to Dutch unis should have at least a comprehension of the culture before applying. But that is keenly anywhere!
