Georgetown LLM - International Tax or Universtiy of Amsterdam

Piyu2022

Hey everyone.

As a foreign attorney trying to get employed outside my home country (in Asia) and make the most of my masters, which one would be preferable:
1. University of Amsterdam - International tax LL.M.(Advanced)
2. Georgetown University - International Tax LL.M.

Thank you for your time :)

A friend of mine completed an advanced LLM in commercial and civil law in Leiden, nevertheless there were no job opportunities presented to her. Rather she had the option to stay for one more year in Netherlands to look for a job. On the other hand, I have seen many LLMs say that they were offered job opportunities after their studies in U.S. prestigious universities (such as Georgetown). In addition, the LLM (if you choose the right courses) makes you elligible to sit for the NY and CA bar exam, while in Netherlands you need to have a bachelors completed. In this regard, if you can financially afford Georgetown (through scholarships and similar), it would be a better option in my opinion.

Hey, to add to the above, Georgetown has a dedicated career team for LLMs that helps students navigate the job search process.

For tax LLMs, there’s also an interview program with several participating employers (big 4 and other accounting firms and law firms) that present many opportunities for employment.

The program director for tax, Ellis Duncan, is also very open to talking to students about the program. You could potentially reach out to him, if you’d like.

Hope this helps.

The tax law job market is hot in the US right now. Not sure about in EU.

Tax LLM programs in the Netherlands are well considered in the European market.

I can tell you from my personal experience that, before finishing the second period of the LLM at Maastricht University, I had already found a job as a senior associate at a Big 4. I should add that I had no previous experience in Europe nor at a Big 4.

Best of luck.
