How to practice in Ontario, Canada.

Mereana

Hi there,

I hold a LL.B from Auckland University in New Zealand. I was admitted to the Bar in New Zealand in 1994. I am now living in Ontario. I think its about time I made use of this degree, now that one of three daughters has flown the nest, and there are two more daughters to go. I would like to know how I can practice in Ontario.

Thanking you all

Mereana

In broad strokes, you likely will need to complete challenge exams and then pursue the normal qualification process. The number of challenge exams will depend on your particular background. You will then be required to complete the Ontario bar exams and a 10-month articling term, though that might (possibly) be shortened depending on your experience. You can start by searching these pages. People ask this question a lot in this forum, and it has been answered a number of times (and to my recollection, quite thoroughly) elsewhere. You should also contact the Law Society of Upper Canada which has information specifically for foreign-educated lawyers.

This information also is linked from the LSUC website and will be of interest to you.
