Hi Tahmina,

You should be able to sit for the NY Bar in Feb 2008.
I have a JD from Australia and wrote the NY Bar this past July.
New York is the only state you can sit for the bar with just a foreign law degree in hand. Many other states, such as California require that you are either licensed in another jurisdiction or do a U.S LLM degree before you qualify to write the bar.

Most of the State Bars in USA require at least 20 semester hours credit courses taken by the applicant in an ABA approved law school.

If you are interested to work in USA, it will be best for your to get LL.M degree as a regular student which will qualify you to study 24 credit hours of regular study. Since you are already LL.M, you may seek admission to SJD course and try getting job as an Adjunct faculty while you are pursuing SJD.

One thing more, for getting an opportunity to work in a law firm, it will be better if you are available in the country and are in a position to meet the people personally. You may seek admission in some good law school in USA either as a 'non-degree' candidate; or you may visit a law school as a "visiting researcher/scholar' and do some academic work; in the process you may get good inter-action with legal fraternity and an opportunity to be engaged with some law firm.
