Intl. - Studying for the BAR

quentin

Hey, How are you doing?

Next fall, I start LLM tax Classes at Northwestern U. I am really excited. I am planning on taking the NY bar exam at the end of the academic year. In this sense, I have some hesitations. Not about the fact that I want to take the BAR exam but how for an INTERNATIONAL STUDENT with an LLM in TAX is to study for the NY BAR exam.

I guess it would be really helpful for any international student in order to be mindful of the pitfalls we might run into. I figure we will have to put in more hours than domestic students but is there any other thing we have to take into account to succeed?

Thanks!

I know you're looking for international perspectives and that's not me, but I'd like to say "don't worry too much about it."

I'm a domestic JD studying for the NY bar right now (and taking it in a few days). Yes, it will certainly be harder for you as an international student who didn't take classes associated with the bar subjects (especially in NY because they have so many subjects). However, that said, if you take a bar review course (barbri/others (approx. $3,000)) they will give you everything you need (more or less) and the material can easily be learned in the same 1 to 2 months domestic students use to study for it.

I hope some international students post some good advice here, but in the mean time you should know that it isn't going to be that hard. It's very doable, and for a few thousand dollars you're given everything you need to know.

Thank you for your advice. I heard that BAR/BRI prepares you really well, though it is kind of expensive...
But, any intl. with further insights (what it is been the hardest adjustment intl. should make to pass...)?
Thank you all!

Dear Esin,

There are many Legal English programs for Intl. students in the US...You just need to google a little bit and find the program that fits better for you. Since you just want to improve your legal English I do not think it matters a lot if you attend a top Law School. Find a cheap one in a nice city or campus (depending on what you want though I would recommend city because in summer time campuses are pretty boring...students are on vacation!) and enjoy yourself.

I appreciate your reply to this post but I would like to put back in track the subject of this post...¿Does any intl. have any tip or insight regarding the BAR exam (pitfalls for intl.)?

Thank you all!

PS: To all law students taking the BAR exam, good luck today!

Dear quentin,

Thanks for your reply. I want to be in US. in 2008 January or Feb. because I have to get visa before and it takes a month I think. So I have a lot of time "to google"(I learned this slang from you a few minutes ago)
