hi..i am a lawyer from India.i have done my LLB from Mumbai University. I am married and currently in New York city.
I am planning to appear for the New York State bar exam.
I would like to know the application procedure for the NY bar exam from scratch.
Also I would like to know that am I required to do LLM in US for the Bar exam or can i appear for the bar exam based on my LLB degree from India.
If i can appear on my LLB degree, do i need to fulfill any extra credits (pre-requisites) from any US institute.

Hi Kwater. I would contact the NY Bar ((518) 453-5990) and ask them. I know that foreign graduates that graduated from a program more or less equivalent to an American JD program, generally, do not need any supplemental classes (and thereby not being required to do an LL.M. program) but it is on a case by case basis. India's legal system is based on the common law system, and its LL.B. programs are generally modeled on UK's, (which resemble very much the JD in the US) so chances are that you would not have to do an LL.M. (perhaps take a few supplemental classes), but that is something that you would have to clear with the NY Bar.

"Section 520 of the Rules of the Court of Appeals for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at Law provides four routes for an applicant to qualify to take the New York bar examination

4. Foreign Law School Study Successful completion of a program of study at a law school outside of the United States that is both durationally and substantively equivalent to a program of study at an approved law school in the United States, and if required, successful completion of an additional program of study at an approved law school in the United States. (Section 520.6 of the Rules of the Court of Appeals) (See also, "Foreign Legal Education" section of this website)"

The NY Board of Law Examiners require lawyers from India to obtain an LL.M. degree from a U.S. law school in order to qualify to sit for the NY bar exam. The standard is not simply that the applicant attended law school in a common law country. The program and course of study in the foreign country must be substantially equivalent in substance and duration to the study of law at an approved law school located in the U.S. The NY Board does not consider the study of law in India to be substantially equivalent in substance to that in the United States. But before you commit to pursuing an LLM degree you should request an advance evaluation of your eligibility from the NY Board at www.nybarexam.org.

I've done llm from India. I was wondering if i still need to pursue llb or llm here in chicago to appear for bar exam or alternatively take up a paralegal program and maybe work as a paralegal.
What is the duration of the LLM course that you enrolled in and How much is the total fee?

If you actually submit an application to the bar, they will review your degree and decide whether you need to do an LLM or not. India's LLB is pretty much the same as the UK LLB (Common law) so realistically, you probably would not need an LLM.
However, in terms of employment, a JD or LLM is a must. You will find it very difficult getting a job in NYC with just an Indian LLB.

I want to also be a solicitor and a lawyer ,please I it possible for me to go for Ghana law school as a Nigerian and will I also be a solicitor after the one program, and after the law school in Ghana can I also practice in Nigeria without going for Nigerian law school. thanks
