Bar exam with foreign LL.M.

wernerd

Hi everyone,

I just read Ilona Stanley's article http://www.llm-guide.com/article/407/us-bar-exam-faq

I completed a foreign legal education over a period of five years and a one-year LL.M. from a common law country (non-US).

Do you know if it is possible to take the bar exam with that qualification?

Thank you very much for your help!

Kind regards
Werner

Depends what bar exam you want to sit for...but in short NO its not enough...

You need an LLM from an approved ABA bar school and a foreign educated LLM will not tend to cover this. However, if you have an LLB then you will be fine to sit in New York and if you are qualified and practicing you can also sit in California.

Nah, it's only the German state legal examination which was considered equivalent to an LLB when i applied for the LLM. But it shouldn't be enough to sit the bar exam..

Well i was hoping for a different answer but thank you anyway!!
