Melbourne Law School

KVC

I am an Indian, and have received a confirmed admission from MLS for Master of Commercial Laws. However, I have also secured an admission at Georgetown Law School too. Now I am pity confused. Its like....I really dont have a hard n fast rule of just wanting to work in US, but then I feel that a US law school degree would always be an added advantage. ( Not taking anything away from MLS....which of corse is a place where I would luv to go).

I am pity fond of Australia, but then I ve got to take this call solely from a career point of view. I wish to try n gain some overseas work ex (preferably in Australia iself) before I return to my home country. I was wondering whether I could get all possible inputs and advise on this specially with regard to MLS.

Can I get some addresses where I can read much more abt MLS... the studies...professors..career prospects...job scenes for International students...placements... and of corse.....the campus life. Also will the MLS LLM degree hold good value in the Asian ever growing legal market.

Cheers.

Hi KVC,

If cost is not an issue, I would advise you to go to Georgetown. Specifically, you must note that a MLS and/or LLM from Melbourne Law School does not allow you to practise in Australia - i.e. it would be extremely difficult for you to secure any legal positions here. If you are interested to practise here, you would be required to send in your qualifications for assessment and would most likely be required to complete a large portion of academic and practical courses before being admitted.

Also, the legal market in Australia is a little tight at the moment and most law firms have ample local candidates to recruit - unless you have some expertise they require. If you are looking into job markets in Asia like Singapore etc - the same principles also apply. In fact, the admission requirements for Singapore is somewhat stricter and you will probably be required to redo your entire studies.

In essence, i think you would be better off doing the Bar exam in US after securing your LLM - i think you can take the NY bar exam. If you are keen on starting a legal career in Australia, i would advise you to embark on a JD program - you'd probably get credits towards your electives.

Let me know if you need more information!

Regards
Greg
