AUS LLM

JVILLA

Hello everyone, I hope everything is going well. I just want some advice regarding job possibilities after concluding a LLM in an Australian University.
My background is: I graduated from a Latin America Country, I finished a LLM in Boston University and Ive been accepted to the NY Bar. Im planning to relocate to Australia and attend a University in either Sidney or Melbourne.
Any suggestions for Universities with a LLM in Business Law ?
What are the requirements to practice in AUS???

Thanks for the help

Hi, JVILLA.

It is depended on your choice.
However you can not forget that law students need significant qualification in LLB to be a proffessional laywer in AU.

LLM needs only some subject(8), on contrast, LLB needs more(32). Basically, top 5% of high school students can be law students in Uni and they try to have mainly double Bachelor degree taking 6years.

I guess your previous subjects can be transferred to the exist subjests in Australia. You can ask the Sydney or Mel Uni directly because all Uni requested different qualifications.

If your dream is to be a lawyer in AU, you can have additional courses in Law school like college of Law after LLM. Alternatively, If you want to held LLM in AU, you can choose your favorite Uni and your major as you like.

In AU, it is surely hard to get proper job for Non Australian.Because Law is not effective to gain Permanent Residence visa. But some international firm might want to hire you beause of your background in NY. In this case, you can request business visa to them or continue studying with student visa.

In my Uni, 70% law students left Uni within the first semister. Even if everyone needs to clear difficult tasks, 70% law students left in law after graduate LLB. Maybe the competitive situation is the same as US. But I think only LLM is not too helpful. You had better think about additional study, if you want to settle down in AU.

Hope your great background will work 100%! for you.
I am in similar situation, to be honest.
I am holding 2 LLM in AU and my country...

I wish we can see someday in Sydney.
