hey thats great. I haven't even checked the website for opening dates, have been very busy these days. When did the applications start? Have you applied for scholarship?
Posted Sep 22, 2007 21:46
Hi
Applications started at the beginning of September. Yes I've applied for the Singapura Scholarship. Sent the essays for that.
If you're planning to apply I suggest you apply soon. I'm assuming that since the applications are on a "rolling" basis therefore the earlier you apply the more chances of admission and a scholarship. Which Univ are you studying at presently?
Cheers

Dear Prashat,
I ahve a question regading the Self-Repoted Transcript in the application form.
IF we send the transcript as a hard copy by Post after taking the print out from the Site then, is there still need to fulfill the Column i.e Self Repoted Transcript?
Because this column confuses me as it requires information
about one of your law school courses as
Couse Title
Porfessor
Credits
Grades
Now i am in Final Semester of the B.A.LL.B (Hons.) here at Faculty of LAw, Aligarh Muslim University. I don't understand what to write in the column of Self Repoted Transcript.
Confused,
Narayan

Hi
You have to fill in the Self Reported Transcript to the best of your knowledge. The Columns for "Course Title" and "Grades" have to be compulsorily filled in otherwise your application will not be complete.
Please do not send the Self Reported Transcript by post as your application is supposed to be completed online. Sending hard copies would only increase the workload for the NYU persons and also would result in your application being incomplete.
For subjects for which you have not yet obtained your marks, you can write "Result Awaited".
I basically wrote the marks which I had obtained in my papers out of 100. For example I wrote 66 out of 100 in the Grades column. I left the "Professor" and "Credits" columns blank as I graduated in 1997 and Delhi University does not have a system of credits. This was also okayed by NYU in an email.
In addition you would necessarily have to send Official Transcripts obtained from your University by hard copy. Without the Official Transcripts your application would be incomplete.
I suggest you write directly to NYU and ask for clarifications on these points. This is more so as I am also an applicant and therefore you must cross check my answers with NYU.
You can write to them at the address given below:
GradMoreinfo@juris.law.nyu.edu
I wish you all the best and please let me know if I can help you further.
Cheers

Dear Prashant
I am so pleased that u replied so fast. Thanks a lot for that.
So i will leave the column of professor and Credit blank.
But i am still confused with the listing of the courses which has to be done in the self reported transcript.
B.A.LL.B (Hons.) is a single course 5 Year integrated course. so should i write B.A.LL.B (Hons.) in the course column and write Result Awaited in the Grade column as the final persentage of all the ten semesters is still not.
OR should i write SEMESTER WISE, i.e 1st sem to 10th Sem and should write persentage of marks in all 7 semesters and leave 8th, 9th and 10th semester with result awaited as there mark sheet is yet to come.
I have two more queries, if you please
I am really confused as to how to write the best essay for the Singapura Scholarship. Especially the first essay about "the current legal dilemma, controversy, or issue facing a country, a region, or the world and suggest a strategy you would use to address the problem" is too wide and confuses my mind to zero in on any one topic.
What kind of legal issue, problem, and dilemma should I pick up? Please guide me in this regard.
Would a topic from corporate law like competition law, oil and gas laws, IPR would be good, or I can write on traditional Indian Legal Issues.
Lastly about the LL.M Program location, i want to choose that location which maximise the chance of getting scholarship, the web site says that the cahces are maximum if you choose Singapore.
SO can i choose the first option i.e
I would like to be considered for the LL.M. program in New York City and NYU@NUS.
OR
Should i choose the option of LL.M in NUS@NUS?
Which option did you choose?
Your answers will help me a lot,
With Thanks,
Narayan

Dear Narayan
I'll try and answer your queries as best as i can.
1. You have to write all the subjects you have studied Semester Wise with the marks obtained in each subject. Start from the 1st Semester and end with the 10th Semester. As regards the 8th, 9th and 10th Semester, I suggest you write to the University and clarify this point.
The NYU Online Application states as under:
"Please list all courses that count, or have been counted, toward your first degree in law. Additionally, if you are pursuing your first law degree, please also list courses in which you are currently enrolled and/or expect to enroll in order to complete the degree. For courses not yet completed, please list "in progress" in the grade field. Please list your courses in chronological order, starting with your first year of study. "
Hopefully this will help you.
2. In regard to your scholarship essays, especially the first essay, I would suggest you write on a topic which you feel confident about and also feel strongly about. I can't suggest any topic for you as you would have to decide for yourself. There are so many issues facing India that it is not an easy decision to make.
My own essay number one was on a topic which was not related to Corporate Law though I am interested in studying Corporate Law subjects and plan to study the Corporate Law subjects if admission is granted to me. I wrote instead on an issue which I feel very strongly about and which has long reaching repercussions for India. I did a lot of research for my essay before submitting it. Plus my mother runs an NGO which deals with Women's Development and Child Labour issues, so I have also been involved with social issues apart from Corporate Law. :)
Choose a topic which you are comfortable with and can analyze properly.
3. I have chosen Singapore as the location and have only applied for the LLM at NYU@NUS. You are right, the website does say that chances for a scholarship are more if you apply for Singapore. I think there is more funding available for the initial years of the Singapore Program. Besides the US is more expensive to live in so if you don't get a full scholarship, it makes more sense to study in Singapore and save on living expenses.
I hope my answers help you and wish you all the best for your application.
Do write to the University with all your doubts as their answers are more relevant than mine since I am not an employee of the University. :)
Cheers
Prashant

Dear Prashat,
Thank You for such a good answer to my queries. You satisfy my doubts like an elder brother. Thanks a lot.
I got a good idea about the first essay and now i think i have written a good essay, i feel confident about it.
But still i need help with regard to the third essay i.e. "listing of two ways you would expect to contribute to NYU School of law as a Singapura scholar".
Can you please suggest me what should I write here.
Profuse Regards,
Narayan

Dear Narayan
You're welcome.
For the third essay, I can't give you the exact answers since you'll have to decide that for yourself. Otherwise it would become my scholarship essay instead of yours, which would not be in the spirit of the application and the scholarship. :)
My suggestion is to write something which you genuinely feel you would be able to do. Don't write answers just for the sake of completing the essay. Instead write 2 ways in which you would like to contribute to NYU and which you feel you can actually achieve. Whatever you write in your essay has to be something which would be practically possible for you to do.
Hope this helps you to decide.
Cheers

Could someone please clarify that for applying to NYU@NUS LLM course, the only mode available is that of applying through NYU online Application Process.
I saw a 'Check Box' in NUS LLM Application Form, as king that 'would you wish to be considered for NYU@NUS course'.
Thanks

Hi
As far as I know, you cannot choose to do different semesters in NYU and NUS. You would have to complete the course either at NUS or NYU.
When I applied, I was informed that there are more chances of a scholarship if you apply to the NYU@NUS course and prefer to study in Singapore.
Last year's fee structure is given at the link below:
http://nyulawglobal.org/graduateadmissions/faqssingapore.htm#a18
Apparently the living costs in Singapore could be between USD 9000 and the living costs in New York are about
USD 19731. These were the estimates for last year. But these could vary for next year and would obviously depend on individual requirements.
I suggest you also write to the Univ with all your queries, for more informed answers, since I am a fellow applicant and not an employee of the Univ. :)
