Willamette - Full Profile

The Law School

As the first law school in the Pacific Northwest, Willamette Law has been at the forefront of legal education since our doors opened in 1883. Today we continue to excel in preparing tomorrow's lawyers. Willamette graduates have consistently enjoyed job placement rates among the highest in the Pacific Northwest, ranked first in Oregon for the JD classes of 2012, 2013, and 2014. Our campus in beautiful Salem, Oregon, is across the street from the Oregon Capitol and state Supreme Court and just blocks from many state agencies and the Marion County Courthouse. Willamette's powerful proximity affords students the opportunity to experience state and local lawmaking and government firsthand.

We believe in the power of community. Develop friendships as well as critical thinking skills and powers of persuasion in our small classes. With an average size of about 45 students, our classes have the feel of seminars and workshops. The supportive learning environment at Willamette Law extends from faculty and staff into the student body. We are all here to succeed and to help others succeed.

The LLM is an advanced law degree for those who have completed the JD at an ABA-accredited American law school or its equivalent from a foreign law school.

Dispute Resolution

The LLM in Dispute Resolution program provides mastery of the fundamentals of dispute resolution, including arbitration theory and practice, mediation and mediation advocacy, negotiation and conflict theory. Specialty subjects range from advanced topics in dispute resolution to advanced negotiation to cross-cultural dispute resolution. Within this curricular framework, it is expected that graduates of the program will be able to apply techniques they have learned from hands-on experience in classes and externships, as well as to have a firm grasp of the theoretical, policy and ethical issues in dispute resolution.

The program consists of 24 credits, including fundamentals such as Arbitration Theory and Practice and specialty subjects such as Advanced Topic in Conflict Theory. International lawyers also will have the opportunity to prepare themselves to take an American state bar exam where available.

Founded in 1983 and ranked among the top ten dispute resolution programs in the country by U.S. News and World Report (2013), the program offers a nationally acclaimed faculty of teachers and scholars, as well as CDR Senior Fellows who are expert dispute resolution practitioners.

Transnational Law

The LLM in Transnational Law program provides students with the fundamentals of international law and dispute resolution, international business transactions, comparative law, private international law, and for foreign lawyers, United States law. International lawyers also will have the opportunity to prepare themselves to take an American state bar exam where available.

The Transnational Law program consists of 25 credits. Students can select from a broad range of classes in law and business, such as international trade, corporate finance, commercial law, taxation and negotiation. Students also have the opportunity to take classes at Willamette’s Atkinson Graduate School of Management.

Our interdependence in today's world highlights the vital significance of transnational law. Preparing lawyers who will meet the challenge of an increasingly globalized legal profession has become a hallmark of legal education at Willamette University College of Law.

The Faculty

Willamette's law faculty includes some of the most respected legal scholars in the country nationally recognized for their research, publications and contributions to the law, particularly in the areas of constitutional law, commercial and business law, international and comparative law, environmental law, and dispute resolution. Yet it is their deep dedication to their students that distinguishes Willamette law professors from others. The school's comprehensive curriculum is further strengthened by the talented lawyers and jurists who serve as Willamette's adjunct professors and visiting faculty.

Though Willamette Law is a small school, it boasts some heavy hitters on the faculty in both international and comparative law and dispute resolution. Professor Symeon C. Symeonides frequently provides counsel to the European Union and The Hague Conference on Private International Law; he recently published his 26th book and has been described by The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Law as “perhaps the world’s leading expert on comparative conflicts law today.” Professor James A. Nafziger, a prolific legal scholar, was recently elected vice chair of the International Law Association. Professor Aaron Simowitz is an expert in international arbitration, negotiation, and cross-border business disputes.

Of interest to students with goals in international criminal law, Professor Caroline Davidson worked on the prosecution team in the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia before joining the faculty. Professor David S. Clark is a leading scholar of comparative law who literally wrote the book on the U.S. legal system for foreign-trained lawyers, Introduction to the Law of the United States. Given these credentials, it's no surprise that Willamette University topped the list of Fulbright Scholar-producing schools in 2015-16, including Professor Wendi Warren Binford.
