States whose jurisprudence is based upon principles of English Common Law Vs. BAR Exam

Hi!
I've been reading in the Bars Rules of CA and NY about STUDENTS RECEIVING THEIR LEGAL EDUCATION OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES who wants to take the Bar Exam should have their origin countries jurisprudence
based upon principles of English Common Law.

I'm from Brazil, it means our jurisprudence is based on Romman's Right (Codified). Does it mean I have no chance about taking the Bar.
Does anyone know a Brazilian Lawyer who could take the Bar Exam?

The problem is, I'm going to SMU (Dallas) for a LL.M. intending to take the Bar Exam after that in CA or NY.

Any info., please.
Thank you
Rico

I don't think that you should worry at all. Russian legal system is also based on the principles of the Roman law. However, I know many Russians who have taken the NY Bar Exam without any problems. I think that the LL.M year in the US covers that requirement.

Dear Ricardo,

I have good news for you: if you are admitted to Brazilian Bar you are allowed to sit for CA bar exam.
Better news: you don't need LLM. At all.

Even better news: if you complete an LLM with certain basics requirements you may sit for the NY bar exam. I think that the requirements are a basic course on american legal system and taking at least one one of the core courses (Civil Procedure, Constitutional law, Corporations, Contracts, Torts, Tax I...)
The LLM must be granted by a law school recognized by ABA.

Good luck with the bar exam and the LLM

I am not sure why you say "better" news. Many States including NY and CA will allow foreign law graduate who studied LLM in the US to sit for its Bar exam BUT no State except CA allows foreign attorney from civil law country to sit for Bar exam.
Which news are better now: mine or yours? :-)

R you sure of that, man?
Because, I think I may also need some core courses, wich I'll be forced to take before or during the LLM.
I've been reading the CA BAR rules for Attorney takers, it's kind of confused, I think I didn't get used to the language yet...but it says sometheing about what WILLIAN said - Basic american law courses.
Well, thank you again. If you have something else to say about it, I'll be waiting.
Best Rgds.

Rico,
I have Russian law education (civil law country). As an attorney i was allowed to sit for bar exam in CA. NO MORE REQUIREMENTS. Do you need better example than myself? :-)
Are you admitted to the BAr in any country?
