SMU LLM - Tax

rjtabby

Does anyone have any insight on the LLM program in tax at SMU? I will be living in the area and I am considering getting my LLM I would just like to know their experiences with the school. I will likely be going there UF or doing the E-LLM at NYU, which ever I get into.

SMU generally is regarded well in the Dallas area. To what extent, I'm not sure but UT is King in Texas. It is usually sketchy in terms of employment prospects. I believe for the LLM to really count, you have to have good experience at some recognized international law firm to get an edge... - Except of course you plan to go back overseas, then it doesn't really matter.

I'm not sure I follow your logic there, ajibra. Why would a SMU tax LLM only be useful overseas or coupled with international experience?

To rjtabby, the SMU tax program is ranked #19 in the newest USNWR rankings*. I don't think it carries much weight outside of Texas, but if you're planning on staying there then you might be fine with SMU LLM.

*the ranking is that SMU's law school has the #19 ranked tax program. It is not the rank of the tax LLM. Among schools that offer tax LLMs, SMU's tax program is the tenth best.
