necessary evil, I would say they are. Their utility lies in the fact that they considerably reduce the search costs for Applicants like you guys and yours truly, who want to pursue Graduate education in the US.

They make sure we don't end up with a lemon, yes? :)

That being said, and given the fact that as the link states, the T14 has largely crystallized now....the ones apart from the Big3 ( co-ranking SLS/HLS @ 2) in the T14 inter se change but have now largely crystallized. Broadly they all make the cut.
