Question about recommendation letters

Sarah1990

Hi everyone,

Possibly a dumb question...each LLM program I've looked at requires recommendation letters. Are you guys getting recommendation letters tailored to the specific school you're applying at? Or are the letters a 'general' recommendation letter which you then use for all schools? Obviously it would be great if each letter was tailored but I don't want to ask my professor to write more than one letter you know?

Thanks in advance.

You can use the same letter of recommendation for different applications. In my opinion, there is no need to have different letters from the same recommender unless there is something school specific (for example if the professor is a graduate of one of the schools you are applying to etc) that the recommender will mention.

Thanks!

Also, does anyone know of anyone who has gotten into a top LLM program without the best recommendation letters? I've been travelling the last year and doing internships in different countries - this just means the employers/professors I'm planning on asking for recommendation letters don't know me that well which is worrying me a bit.

Thanks!

Hey!

I got accepted into a number of the top US universities for this fall with the same recommendation letters - no tailoring at all.

Here is a link to my tips about getting recommendation letters: http://llmstudent.aussieblogs.com.au/llm-transcripts-and-referees/.

Hope it helps!
