A friend of mine got his Michigan acceptance a week ago and he has until late-March to confirm.

I hope you get into Michigan! Better school than Cornell and a HUGE alumni network. Cornell alumni are centered around Boston and NY, whereas Michigan alumni are all over the United-States ... it's a much more national school. Virginia is slightly more national than Michigan, though it's more eastern-seaboard oriented whereas Michigan has a stronger network in the midwest.

Cornell is still excellent though - you should be thrilled about your admission! The only downside to Cornell is that they dont offer a wde variety of courses because the law school is so small.

When did you guys sent your applications to Cornell? How long did it take to get a reply? Also, are you graduates, or post-graduates?
Thanks.

I prefer UVa over Cornell. I also applied to UMich, but I haven't received a response. I wrote to an admissions officer three days ago and she responded to me that I will have a decision in the next few weeks.

I sent my applications to Cornell and UMich late november and to UVa late december.

We are having much more participation in this forum, I hope that it continues this way.

How are responses from UMich being sent? Email or mail?

Michigan sends an e-mail confirming that you've been accepted into the program and they mail a big package with several booklets via airmail. My friend received his package 2 days after the email.

So, I am not gonna meet you, Mexllm, at Cornell. My best choice now is Cornell as its reputation is far better than Umich and UVA in my country,

Still waiting for the reply from the others, though, especially, HLS.

My friend who got admitted to Michigan (and Duke) is likewise looking towards UVa as his most likely destination so far. HLS is his first choice, but admissions are very competitive.

I heard that the school places great importance on the two essays when evaluating candidates. Did you write a strong essay?

I believe I did but I guess it's up to the Admissions Committee to decide. I have also heard that HLS tends to distribute its admissions geographically, so I am really competing with other Mexican lawyers that applied.

As to the competitive admissions, the HLS program is bigger than UVA's, but I guess more people apply to it (and few people pass the opportunity to attend to Harvard). I have heard of people that have not been admiited to other programs (UVA, Chicago) and have been admitted to HLS. So you never know.

Bonono, one question... is your friend really you? Just kidding.

Best of luck to everyone. Let try to make this discussion group as popular as possible. LLM's have very few resources online (compared with JD's), and we can surely gain alot from everyone's comments.

I applied to HLS and Yale last year and didn't get an response before April. You can, however, give them a call around mid March and ask when they will send out the letters. They will tell you the day and will also provide the date you inquire about the outcome which safes, of course, a lot of time, especially if you are outside the US. The only requirement is that you call in person and are able to answer some simple questions (like birthday and -place, date of your graduation, etc.) Good luck to all of you.

You should completely forget about the rankings of some of these weirdo LL.M. lists on the web. The only ranking that counts is the law school ranking from US News. What does it help, if NYU is ranked better than Harvard, for instance, if nobody outside the US can tell the difference between the University of Miami and NYU? Also, the prestige of the university itself will always follow your LL.M degree, which means that a Harvard degree will always have a better reputation than one from Columbia (even though Columbia is one of the schools that is really close to the H-bomb), because in the end, Harvard's other schools and programs have a huge impact on the overall prestige. I haven't heard of Brown or Dartmouth before I arrived to the States, even though they belong also to the Ivy League Schools. But both universities have only a few top programs that in the end suffer from the rankings of the other programs, a reason these schools are not overly know abroad. I agree with the opinion already stated by somebody and recommend to go for the brand, if you are a foreigner, and don't plan to spend your life doing corporate law in New York. For US lawyers, of course, other criteria should be more important.
