Dear all,
I am an Indian law student. I will be graduating next year from one of the country's top law schools and I already have an offer from a leading firm with a retainer of around Rs. 90,000 (apprx. 1930 USD) p.m which is quite good by Indian standards. However I am keen on doing an LLM before starting work and catch is I am not sure if the firm will be willing to postpone the offer by an year. Given the situation I would be grateful if someone could tell me about the job prospects after an LLM in corporation law or international finance from an Ivy League School. I am mainly looking at Harvard.

hello,
My advice is that you take experience of a year or two. This has three major advantages...
1. Ivy leageus require experience,
2. you ll gather the huge fee funding from the firm you're working into and
3. you will get good LoRs

hello, thank you so much for replying. i would have ideally liked to do what you are suggesting. but the only problem is that the firm i've got an offer from will require me to sign a bond of four years and if i quit i would have to pay them quite an hefty amount. though this sort of an negetive covenant is usually not enforceable in court, the firm can still make it pretty difficult for me. and on that count you know i'd not be getting any LoRs from them. which is precisely why i wanted to know if there are job prospects if any in the american market post an Ivy LLM so i could weigh my risks becoz widout atleast a few years exp abroad my LLM would not add much value to me in the Indian market.

hey, thanks so much for reply. can you please tell me if your cousin did his LLM directly after law school or after some years of work experience. Essentially I am trying to figure out if my job prospects would differ given that I would only be a fresh graduate.

Hi Sir, I am doing my LLM in IP concentration from N. Benjamin Cardozo Law School in New York which is known for its best IP program. My area of concern is that do we have a good career after doing LLM in IP concentration. My majors are patent, copyright, trademark and unfair competition, trade secret and rest courses related to distressed investing. I am a foreign graduate in LLB from PU and when I joined this course I was very sure about the opportunities which I will be having around the world but someone told me that IP is not that good and do we have a good job prospects in USA.

he went there after 2 years of work ex.....but i honestly think work ex is not that essential....but be please be careful to select the college according to ur stream choice....that is essential absolutely.....because companies back here in india do tend to look at ur univ profile per subject..........columbia is best for corporate law.

Dear all
I am at Columbia at the moment and career services just told us that the jo prospectives for LL.M.'s are slightly better than the used to be, but still very, very bad.
Unless you always wanted to work in the U.S and are willing to take (maybe usless) time, sweat and tears after graduation, don't come to study. Unless, however, you are looking for a really nice experience abroad and want to do the LL.M. without regard to the job market. Even JD's from top schools are looking for jobs.
Note: Sometimes the job opportunities come while u are here, because u are from a country a law firm wants to have lawyers from. But do not bet on that...

In my opinion, if I were you I would take the job and at least finish your mandatory amount of years there before you try for the LLM. There's nothing like job experience especially in the legal field. It boosts your resume significantly. I worked 4 years at the AG's office before going back to school for my LLM.
Best of Luck on your decision.

I just read that about a third of US firms are planning to hire in the next months:
