I am still waiting for decisions, but can't help myself from wondering if this is a particularly bad time to do an LLM (and spend a small fortune!).
Any thoughts?
Is now a bad time to spend $65,000 on an LLM?

YES!

I have same concerns. I got accepted to GULC and University of Florida for tax LLM, but now am having second thoughts about going to school. I have a pretty good and secure (relatively speaking, in this economy) job, I am a 3rd year lawyer, and am wondering whether it's wise to risk the job and get further into debt. I am curious whether the schools will be open to deferrals based on the economic/ financial situation out there. Probably not, but I am thinking of asking for deferral.

And noone will be able to make a decision for you. It depends on you...can you wait a year? If yes I think GULC and UofF won't say NO to a defferal. They will understand ... I am sure about that!

Does one-year deferral really make sense? I mean, u guys believe the market would be better in 2011?

Yes, I think that is a bad time, or at least worst than last years, but for some of us this is a personal dream and it would be hard to wait one more year.
In any case, if you dont have all the money (and you need loans) or if you want to study an then work in USA, is better not to come this year I believe that US new policies discourage companies from hiring foreigners, so maybe we could have visa problems; but, most of all, law firms are not hiring, but firing people.
I think that by January 2011 (this is the date of the job fairs), the market should be better.
BTW, I think that you will spend more than $65,000. At least for NYC or Boston you should consider around $80,000

Sorry, but $80k for Boston is way over the top!

By Boston I mean Harvard, not BU, sorry.

It is impossible to predict what the economy will look like in 2011...but it is true that the prospect of getting back on the job market with debts is a scary one. At the same time it would be foolish to let opportunities pass when one is admitted in a top law school...tough decision to make!...I have the same concern at the moment being admitted at CLS for next year's LLM.
