General LL.M?

Noura

I asked before about taking the NY Bar after a UOL (British) LL.M. But I recall reading somewhere that the degree is invalid if done by distance ed, is this true?

Also, if the external degree is accepted will it have to be in a specific subject? I just fear that I'll take several specialized modules (a mix of human rights, business, IP) and then have my degree rejected for Bar suitability. I didn't get from the NY BAR website concrete answers to this.

-Thank you

Hi. Let me clarify. Will a LL.M have to be in general courses to be accepted by the NY Bar Team or I can take specialized courses?

A friend of my friend told me that specialized LLM is eligible for taking NY bar exam. However, you have to take some basic law course such as law and ethnic or something like that.

Thank you, pra608. Would the "law and ethics" course be taken as one of the LL.M modules, or is taken after the degree? Note that my LL.M will be from the Uni of London (External Degree Programme). Did your friend do a U.K. or a LL.M from the U.S.?

She said she had to take "additional" course during her study, this mean she had to take more credit than the requirement need. However, she holds an LL.M. from U.S.

how useful is LLM for a non law graduate ?
Can it help in eventually practising law in UK?

I'm a non law graduate and will start a U.K. LL.M degree. From what I've gathered, you can eventually work your way from the LL.M to ending up practicing law in the U.K. Do a search with my name (about the LPC and steps thereafter in becoming a U.K. solicitor) and you'll see someone else answered this question for me more precisely.

Thanks again. Therefore, I need to contact NY to find out for sure if a foreign specialized LL.M will also be accepted, and what courses if any in addition I'd need to take.
