Fulbrighters

Hi all.

Happy new year.

I have a question for current/former Fulbrighters regarding the outcome of applications to US law schools. I am curious to find out if any fulbrighters have been rejected by US law schools for LL.M programs? As the IIE applies on behalf of Fulbright award recipients I wanted to gauge if having a Fulbright scholarship already made applicants more desirable to universities, esp the Ivy League...

Thanks

I know of a number of Scandinavian Fulbrighters who got rejected from Harvard, for instance. While it is true that the Fulbright stamp will make you stand out, it is not an instant ticket to fame. I don't think the best US law schools want to outsource the admissions process to some randomly elected Fulbright officers in various parts of the world. We'll just have to wait patiently...

Sophie - thanks for the insight. Wasn't expecting it to be a walk in the park by just having a fulbright...but was curious to get as much info from previous fulbrighters about their experiences.

Oma - I have read the blog but found it to be fairly specific to that particular Fulbright Commission....

As a former FB scholar, I can only say that the scholarship certainly gives you an edge, but that the contours of that edge vary a great deal from school to school. Being a FBer also has other benefits, FB-meetings in the US, the alumni associations etc. So even if youre still in limbo as to what school youll end up at, be happy that you are a FBer!

Good luck!

Yeah, 2 of the LLM students at Vanderbilt this year are Fulbright scholars (one is a law school Dean in Kerala, India, and the other is a professor at UCA en Managua, Nicaragua)... I am sure the Fulbright played a factor but, at the same time, their professional qualifications are both very strong even without the Fulbright on their CV. Many of the other LLMs have similar professional qualifications. I don't know all of their reasons for choosing Vanderbilt over other programs or how they compare to the LLM class at Harvard, but the Fulbright definitely improves your chances at the top 20 or so law schools in the U.S. Good luck.

The Fulbright Commission of India sends all, or a large part of, its scholars to Vanderbilt for some reason.

I know that our Social Justice Program Director has very strong connections with legal communities around India, and that he personally recruits LLM students with an interest in public interest law to come here from India each year. But I was not aware he had a good relationship with the Fulbright Commission... that's interesting. The school does have very strong name recognition in India and Bangladesh (Yunus received his PhD from Vanderbilt... graduate students visit Bangladesh each spring to meet with Grameen Bank officials). The Law School only got involved with that project last year though.

I actually heard that as an Indian Fulbrighter studying law in the US, you can only study at Vandy. I don't want to spread false rumors so if anyone wants to object, please do so and clarify the situation. Thanks

Hi Fulbrighters,

Im a Fulbrighter heading west in the fall of 2009. Like many of you, I keep revisiting this webpage all too often hoping to find information that will somehow calm my nerves. Its strange given how fully aware I am of the fact that the page cannot provide what I am ultimately looking for, i.e. admission e-mails

Ive applied to YLS, HLS, CLS and NYU (roughly in that order of preference). YLS feels like a stretch of the imagination. I do, however, believe that I have a fairly decent chance at the other schools. It remains to be seen. They are all excellent choices, especially for someone like me who is interested in International Law. So I'll be happy no matter where I'll end up.

Hopefully our paths will X somewhere on the east coast come August. Until then, best of luck to you all!

I am a Fulbrighter in a top law school (10-13th among the 200 in the country) and I may be qualitifed to answer your question: yes, some Law Schools have not taken Fulbrighters.

My first choice was within the top 8 but they did not want me; the same goes for my best friend here (who happened to be a fulbrighter but another continent who had applied to the same other uni).

Any news from Fulbrighters out there? I got in at NYU on a Grotius and got a half tuition waiver at Columbia. Still waiting for HLS (late March) and Yale. Yale decisions should be out this week or next I think (it seems some people have already received calls). Best of luck!
