To the fulbrighters
Does anyone of you know if IIE applies to the universities on our behalf before the TOEFL score reaches IIE? Or IIE waits until the TOEFL score comes, in this case we are not eligible for the early review, right?

Shayan,
I was told that IIE only sends the application to the universities when all your papers are complete (at least that happened in my case).
I have been told that the IIE will send my application to Yale, Harvard, GW and American University. I am also applying to Columbia, NYU and Michigan. What about you guys???

Hi Shayan,
I am Swiss national and have also been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship. Where exactly did you come across those fact sheets regarding placement of current/past Fulbrighters?
Cheers,

Many thanks, shayan, that's an interesting statistic. Given that it doesn't further differentiate between fields of study and/or graduate/undergraduate/non-degree programs, it's only of limited use, of course, but definitely encouraging to see that a considerable number of Fulbrighters has been admitted to the "crème of law schools" in the past.

Dear All,
For those of you interested in an internship after completing your LL.M. in the U.S., please find herein a link to a job manual edited by Stanford Law School which I judged contains valuable information concerning the U.S. legal market.

Are there any other latins around?

Hi all Fulbrighters,
To apply to some law schools listed by IIE such as HLC, SLC etc (most of them are within top 20 with a deadline of December), does the IIE ask you to complete an additional appl. form for any of those law schools? for instance, i had to complete the Fordham appl. form in addition to the standard Fulbright appl. form. I have completed and sent it to IIE. But i regret that IIE informed me so late that i could not expect my appl. form to be submitted to those listed law schools as the deadline has already been over.
Thanks for your answer,

Any fulbrighter for the year 2008-2009?hello I am Indian Law graduate(2007) want to apply for fullbright scholarship. Please suggest the procedure

Hi Shayan,
Thanks for your answer. Maybe you can ask the confirmation about this from the US Embassy in your country, because sometime, the responsible does not take care enough to inform us about this accordingly like my case. I think the requirement i mentioned applies to fulbrighters from any countries. This might affect our chance to be considered and admitted by top ranking law schools.
Regards,

I asked the embassy. They recommended not to apply by myself because it may cause confusion. In addition, last years' fulbrighters didn't apply to universities themselves. I hope we get the chance to be admitted in high ranked law school!

You can check the fulbright web site. India has the first rank in receiving scholarships from USA. I know they have special commission in India. The web site address is: www.foreign.fulbrightonline.org

To Shayan,
Actually, I meant that the IIE instructs all Fulbrighters who pursue LLM to submit an additional appl. to the IIE and not to the schools (which you would like to get in) directly. Anyway, that is what I was instructed to do by the IIE through the US Embassy in my country. I would remind that this requirement applies only to LLM Fulbrighters.
The law schools requiring the additional appl. are as follows (with their respective ranking):
Boston College LS (19)
Columbia (4)
Duke (14)
Fordham (25)
GW LS (19)
Havard (1)
NY SL (4)
P. Dickinson (85)
South Methodist (unknown)
Arizona (41)
Berkeley (7)
Chicago (4)
Georgia (31)
Houston (64)
Michigan (7)
San Diego (64)
San Fancisco (second tier)
Vermont (97)
Virginia (7)
Yale (2).

One of my friends who has gotten a fulbright scholarship in public health is asked by IIE to make extra applications yesterday. I don't know if it works for LLM fulbright applicants too.

Any news from the fulbright program? Have you gotten any news of your placements by IIE?
Posted Jan 29, 2008 16:42
This is directed mainly at past Fulbrighters or any one who knows: how strictly is the 1 year rule enforced? The only logic I can think of for the rule is that you must serve your country in return for getting a Fulbright, but how do they police it? What if you fly back into your home country and out again the next day? As for VISA, what if you get an employer whilst in the States whose willing to assist you with all that stuff?
Any idea Shayan?

My understanding is that fulbright grants should not work in USA for one year after their graduation. However, they can come to US for further studies or personal trips other than getting jobs. For doing a job, it is a regulation and I myself don't know anyone who had gone to US for work after graduation.Maybe the others have some ideas in this regard?

Further to this last issue, please have in mind that Fulbrights regulations provide that once a grantee had completed its program of studies, he or she may only remain in the U.S. for an extra calendar year and for the exclusive purpose of pursuing an internship, if sponsored by an American Employer and such petition is approved by the corresponding academic adviser. In addition, it is important to point out that the possession of a J1 visa status does not allow its beneficiary to proceed with an adjustment of its immigration status; in other words, the US Immigration Laws forbid anyone to switch from J1 to another type of visa, even though you find a sponsor (work, relatives, etc). Furthermore, the J1 visa regularly expires on the same day on which the program of studies usually ends while it also demands the complying of a 2 year foreign residency requirement. The only exceptions to the aforementioned are either a marriage occurred among a US Citizen and J1 holder, or being hired by an international organization such as the UN, IMF, OAS, etc. In order to reentry to the US, a Fulbrighter who had previously returned home has to obtain a B1/B2 visa by its own means. Please fell free to either reply or ask me anything else about this subject.
Below is a link which I judge may be useful to anyone interested in pursuing an internship in the US after completition of its LLM.

Thanks jmromero
It was a really valuable information, thanks.
Is there any other news from the Fulbright program? Has anyone gotten his or her admission from any law school?
Or did IIE informed you of any update?
What should we do now, this wait is killing! When can we know about our placements!?
