Hi folks,
I'm about to obtain my Law degree in Argentina; and was looking for a Corporate - Business Law LLM in the US.
However, I would like to know your opinion in regards to the possibility of getting a job in the US after obtaining the LLM, considering the fact that I'm not American.

En cuanto a tu pregunta, si tu interes es el derecho corporativo, creo que es mejor hacer el LLM en Corporate Law que el LLM general porque:
1) creo en la especiliazacion- es mejor saber bien de un tema que mas o menos de varios temas,
2) si quieres buscar trabajo en una firma de abogados en NY, creo que te ayuda un poquito mas (no mucho mas) tener un titulo en corporate law que en general studies,
3) si quieres ejercer derecho corporativo aqui, hay algunas clases del LLM en corporate law que te pueden ser utiles (pero no son necesarias), por ejemplo Securities, Corporations, Corporate Finance y Mergers and Acquisitions,
4) el LLM en corporate tambien te da bastante flexibilidad en cuanto a las clases que puedas ver; yo por ejemplo vi dos claes de derecho internacional publico que me encantaron y vi clases en el Stern Business School.

Es importante que no tomes tus decisiones con base a la idea de trabajar en NY (no se si ese es tu plan). Es bastante dificil conseguir trabajo en NY para abogados extrangeros. Se de casos de personas extranjeras, que han metido varias materias de corporate que no les interesaban, buscando tener una mayor oportunidad de conseguir trabajo y no solo no consiguiron trabajo sino que no disfrutaron tanto el LLM. Lo imporatante es que disfrutes el programa y las clases y lo demas se va dando.

En conclusion, si bien es cierto que el programa que escojas es una de las muchas variables que pueden influir en que consigas trabajo, creo que lo mas importante es que escojas el programa que mas te interese a ti. Si te interesa el derecho corporativo, el Corporate LLM es muy buen programa; si quieres ver otras materias de derecho publico, seminarios u otros escoje el general. El nivel academico sera bueno en los dos programas, en realidad depende mucho de que profesores escojas y cuantas ganas le pongas tu a las clases.

Hi Esteban and Lionel (by the Lionel, great nick!).
The info you guys have provided is extremely useful; and I'm aware that unfortunately I need at least a couple of years of experience (although I'm already working in a small law firm) in order to get the most out of the LLM.
I guess considering the difficulty of the Bar Exam; and also the fact I obviously do not have an American citizenship, I guess the idea of working in the US as a lawyer is a bit complicated.
Anyway, there are some major law firms here in Argentina which will surely value having an LLM.

Finally, in regards to Esteban's question; I have not still decided which university to attend to; since I was hoping to find not so expensive (the ones I considered interesting where about U$60.000....); so I'll keep on looking for a cheaper LLM (about U$30.000).
