Fordham

I have a question to all of those admitted : do you have your degree already? and if no, what do you think was your strong point in your cv that showed them that you are what they want? The reason I ask this is because I applied to another school with a friend of mine. He has his degree, I will be graduating this year. My background was far more impressive than his (worked while studying in law firms, publications, better grades... so far) but they opted for him (to be exact, he is on standby list). And I wonder whether I should just forget about the LL.M for now... I have already applied to a few schools (among them Fordham as well) and I am beginning to feel like it's a lost battle.

Yes, I have my degree since a few years and I am also admitted to the bar in my country. I work in a top-tier law firm and have various extracurricular pro bono work...that's it...I'd give it a shot...I have a friend who was accepted at Stanford, but did not get into Cardozo...sometimes its very strange...

Hi Tota, you're from India, aren't you?

While your friend's grades etc. may be known to you, there are other aspects of his application that you would have no idea about. Like the personal statement and recommendations. One never knows what causes the admissions committee to swing one way or the other. Besides, i think work experience really matters - i feel interacting with, experienced practitioners, clients, counsel and/or judges etc., massively escalates one's ability to appreciate legal theory and its practical implications.

I am not indicating that either of you friends is better, but your description seems to suggest that your friend might have been better equipped.

Then again, the exact converse is possible with another admissions committee. All is well :-)
