Cornell, Duke or Fordham

pmm2009

Hey Friends,

I got an admit from Cornell, Duke and Fordham. I'm in dilemma to choose the one. After, LL.M. I'm planning to take the NY Bar exam. Among these 3, any thoughts on which one has better placement chances.

Thanks in advance.

Cornell
but if you are a foreign student (not US) you can save your time and money .. you won't get a job in the US, even with a bar exam.. they are laying off hundreds/thousands of lawyers currently, won't be hiring any any time soon.

I would and will choose Duke (been accepted to Cornell also) for the following reasons;

1. While Cornell is currently ranked higher by only one place duke has had a better ranking over the years. while ny firms want t14 schools they won't simply judge them on that years ranking they want a school that is consistantly high. Also Duke university in general is higher ranked than cornell in US and abroad

2. Duke careers help is far better than cornell as you should know if you've been admitted to both and have been in contact e.g. Cornell admitted me nothing else whereas Duke admitted me and then got me in contact with a number of Alumni working in NY which is an invaluable asset.

3. For Networking Duke is apparentley closer to NY. Cornell is in the back of beyond and it takes at least 4 hrs by train to NY (by my accounts there is no airport) whereas there is the raeligh/durham airport meaning it takes around 1 1/2 to 2 hrs to get to NYC

4. location - Duke means easier acces to florida(Orlando Miami) D.C. memphis nashville new orleans

also to Map2009 stop being so pessimistic while it is true that hundreds of lawyers are being laid off it is a good time to do a masters. we won't be in the job market for another year already the fed is talking about recession ending in US this year when that happens hiring will start again in small parts admittedly at first but who will firms higher when they need attorneys 35 yr old 5,6,7 yr associates who they have to pay $250k to or new JD/LLM's who they only pay between $130K to $160K.

Alos when the stimulus plan kicks in all $1trillion of it lawyers will be needed in their droves which will hopefully also mean private firms will begin tradin/transactions.

All i can say is that if Map 2009 wants a job in the US (i don't know if you do) you have the totally wrong attitude and will certainly fail as a result of it

its alays a rsik going to another countr to try and get a job from an LLM but who have you ever heard suceeding by sitting at home waiting

I agree with Irishlad about US job market
but in my opinion ...
1. Cornell 40,1%- Duke 39,9 %
2. Fordham 20%
:)

yeah its true I am pessimisitic...and I whished you were right, but the recession will be gping longer than just this year. trust me..and if you do an LLM just to get a job in the US (in my opinion) uts a waste of time. BUT I would be very happy if you proved me to be wrong... well time will tell ;)

well "trust me" was more a phrase than a statement you should take verbally...
yeah I am listening to experts too (a lot of them),.. and the US and especially western Europe will have this crisis for 4 - 8 years.... 4 years was the most optimistic outlook.

To Irishlad ...
40,1 %( Cornell) + 39,9 %( Duke) + 20%( Fordham)= 100 % LLM
Without Fordham is easier :50,1 %( Cornell) + 49,9% ( Duke) = 100% LLM
P.S. % describes my preferences
I hope is clear :)

I can only give my very best recommendations of Duke. Studied a semester there a few years back as an exchange student (part of my law degree in my home country). The facilities are excellent, the staff is extremely nice and helpful and will do anything in their power to help and service the international students. The academic level is quite high.

The campus is great - like a "mini-city" - however, Durham is not very inspiring. On the other hand, Chappel Hill (voted the best city to live in in the US for a number of years) is only 30 minuttes away, the beach is only a few hours drive away, N.Y., D.C. and other great cities are only an hour or so away by plane etc. etc.
