CA BAR - non common law country

Blimunda

I am a law graduate from a law school in a non-common law country and NOT admitted to practice in my home country, will LLM be enough to sit for a BAR in CA? If not enough (which I think is unfortunately true) what is enough? The rules say 4 years of legal study. Can I do 2 years of LLM and 2 years of correspondence school? If after the LLm I ask The BAR will they tell me what and how many courses I have to take to be eligible to sit for a BAR. Was anyone in the same situation as I am? Please HELP!

Because California allows all foreign attorneys to take the California bar without regard to residency, I think the best way would be for you to become an attorney in your home country, complete a one year US Law LL.M for bar prep and then take the the bar exam. Another alternative is to complete a 4 year online program in your home country (Concord University has such a program) or a two year JD program for those with a foreign law degree at a school such as Northwestern.
